Death. Destruction. Pain. A soulless void. It’s his life. It’s his reality.

Emo doesn’t feel. Anything. His soul is dark and filled with hatred. People in the small town of Malus watch him with fear, with reverence. Exactly the way he prefers it.

Guilt surrounds him, caging him in an ominous past he refuses to let go. Can’t let go. His past is responsible for the shell of the man who now exists. He doesn’t know any other way to survive.

The woman who haunts his dreams is his only salvation. He’s hurt her over and over again. He didn’t have a choice.

The key he holds on to, the one he uses to carve into his flesh, is the key to his hell. It’s his reminder of the pain he’s suffered and inflicted.

Will there be retribution? Can Emo be saved? Or is he destined to live in this dark hell he’s surrounded himself in for the rest of his life?

Review

4.5 stars!

The final book in the Hell Night series, there was a lot of anticipation in the lead up to this book, and I am so thrilled that it was everything that I was hoping it would be! A dramatic and beautiful love story between two very broken people, Emo’s story both broke and healed my heart and I absolutely loved it!

From the very beginning this series has captured my heart. The story of four boys who were subjected to horrific abuse, only to rise up to take revenge on their abusers and dedicate their lives to protecting others. It’s dark, intense and raw, with nothing held back on the page, and it’s chock-full of triggers (sexual, physical and emotional abuse, self-harm, violence, torture and death), but if you can get past the disturbing scenes, these books are a great read, and I have loved every one of them!

There’s pretty much nothing I can say about this book in particular that won’t be a spoiler for the series, so I’m keeping my review vague.

Throughout the series, Emo has been the most troubled and disturbed of the boys. His torment was arguably worse than that of this three adopted ‘brothers’, and he has struggled the most to adjust with all that he endured as he is dealing with tremendous guilt over things he was forced to do, in addition to all that was done to him. His story is truly heartbreaking, and I ached for him in this book.

I don’t feel compassion or pity or concern toward people. Yes, I love my brothers and I’d give my life to protect them and the people in this town, but (she) is different. I feel everything for her. I feel so damn much that it’s overwhelming, and I don’t know what to do with all the emotions.

His heroine is everything I wanted for him! So incredibly damaged herself, but amazingly strong. She has endured hell, and she has huge demons to wrestle, but from the moment she and Emo connect, it’s a journey of healing for the two of them as we watch them be there for each other, support each other and pull each other through the darkness into something incredibly special.

“I don’t want to live like this anymore. I don’t want to fear being touched. I don’t want to freeze when someone gets too close. You’re one of the only ones I trust to help me.” She swallows. “Please.”
Fucking goddammit to hell. I can’t say no to her.

His gaze holds me captive, and I’m not sure I ever want him to let me go.

The romance moves pretty quickly – especially considering all that they’ve been through – but their connection is deep, and they are by each other’s side pretty much constantly. It’s intense, but it’s real, their emotion for each other is so raw, and every moment of watching them together is just beautiful.

“Do you love me?” I ask, my voice raw with emotion.
“You know I do.”
“No.” I shake my head and elaborate, needing him to understand. “Do you love me more than just a friend?”
His Adam’s apple moves up and down as he swallows. “With everything in me.”

Spoiler
“If we didn’t share the past that we do and we were just a man and a woman, would you want to be with me?”
“I’d never fuckin’ let you go.”

This was a really beautiful read. There were scenes and moments that I reread multiple times just to soak it all in, and I revelled in seeing both of these characters find love and a happy ending with each other. And though it’s a hard read at times (triggers!), it’s such a gorgeous love story.

“You’ll never convince me that I deserve you … But you were right; there’s not a man alive I trust to take care of you like I will or who will love you as much as I do.”

The rest of the boys are a big part of the story of course, and I loved seeing them happy and together and supporting Emo and his girl, and there’s an epilogue which provides nice closure for the series (as well as a hint for a spin-off to come!).

I absolutely loved it – 4.5 stars!
