Welcome to the Black Dagger Brotherhood! An elite group of vampire warriors charged with the protection of their race, and a sensational bunch of badasses. Leather-wearing, weapon toting, hugely muscled, badasses – with attitude! But they are also incredibly honourable, and fiercely loyal, and it’s impossible not to instantly fall in love with each of them!
Wrath is the leader of the BDB. A cold and brutally effective killer, he reluctantly promises to see the daughter of one of his ‘brothers’ through her transition from half human / half vampire to full vampire. It’s a potentially fatal process, and she will need the blood of a strong male vampire to see her through it.
Beth doesn’t know she’s half vampire. And when the big, hulking male shows up at her house dressed in black leather and wraparound shades, she initially freaks out, and then does what anyone would do in her situation – she drags him in to bed. Hot damn! Wrath and Beth have sensational chemistry and steam up the pages.
I love the dynamic between these two, instantly drawn to each other (obviously!), they have to deal with the differences between them, and the extreme situation they find themselves in. After centuries of fighting, Wrath has closed off his emotions. He’s not the tender or gentle type, but finds that being around Beth brings out feelings in him that he’s never felt before. And Beth is a sensationally strong heroine. When Wrath introduces her to his world, yeah she has a bit of a meltdown (who wouldn’t), but she takes it in her stride and accepts her fate head on, and I love that about her!
They have their ups and downs but their relationship develops beautifully and they fall hard for each other. There is no doubt Wrath is insanely protective of her, but as he slowly starts to accept his feelings, he lets down his defenses and lets Beth in and allows her to see his vulnerabilities. And in return Beth accepts him, and gives all of herself to him like she has never done with anybody before, giving him the strength to claim his destiny. The two of them have a true, equal partnership, and it’s gorgeous.
Told in multiple POVs, we get to meet a number of characters who will form a part of the series – including hardass cop, Butch O’Neill, whose life is slowly crumbling around him, beautiful aristocrat, Marissa, and her doctor brother, Havers.
And then there are the Lessers. These are the bad guys, the soulless slayers out to eradicate the vampire race, and the ones that the Brotherhood are fighting. While I get that it’s important that we know what’s going on with them, I found that the constant back and forth between the main action and then the POV of fore-Lesser Mr X and his psychotic goings on really breaks into the pacing of the story.
But overall this is an exciting intro to a sensational series. I adore each of these boys and, having read the series and knowing each of them so well, I am loving the opportunity to go back and revisit their stories from the very beginning. And the interaction and banter between them is GOLD!! There is action, sensational banter, a healthy amount of sexy time, and gorgeously swoony romance. It’s a must-read for any PNR lover.
