Review

I loved this little extra from the Black Dagger Brotherhood series.

The whole premise of this novella, as well as my review, is a spoiler for anybody that hasn’t read the first six books of the series (up to Lover Enshrined). So read ahead at your own peril!

I am currently in the middle of a reread of the entire series, and didn’t read this novella the first time around. I was actually a little nervous just knowing this book existed. Knowing what Zsadist had been through, and reading all about his heart-wrenching struggle to move beyond his past and be happy with Bella, and seeing this book and discovering that things were going to fall to pieces again for him after Nalla’s birth – I wasn’t sure I wanted to see that. But OMG, this novella was just beautiful!!!

I started reading and was instantly heartbroken for Bella learning that Z had totally withdrawn from her and their newborn young (her heart-to-heart with Phury made me really mad at Z!). And then, of course, that heartbreak extended over to Z when we got to see his side of the story *sniff*, although I was still mad at him – step up man!

There’s a bit of an interlude to the sad stuff with a bit of action when Z goes out into the field with Rhage, and I like how that was used to tie in to what was happening in his personal life, and prompt the big virtual slap that he needed.

But thankfully, the sad and stupid doesn’t last too long, and Z and Bella’s reconnection was absolutely beautiful to watch. Their love for one another is stronger than ever, and the two of them sort out their issues functionally, wanting so much to be there for each other, and the heart-clenching honesty between them made just a little bit weepy. As did Z’s utter desperation to hold on to his family.

“I’m so sorry. I love you. Please forgive me. Can’t live without you.”

And then Z’s moments with Nalla topped everything off perfectly. So, so gorgeous! I loved seeing flashbacks to her birth, and there was even a very clever little tie in to the epilogue in Z’s book that I thought was a nice touch!!! I hope we get to see more of their relationship in future books of the series.

“You’re like your mahmen,” he whispered. “You make the world go away for me”

This little novella is beautifully written, there is so much emotion (as well as a WHOLE heap of sexy time!) and I recommend it for all of the Z and Bella fans out there!

4.5 stars.
