I freaking ADORED this book!!! And I am now officially out of new ways to say how brilliant Kristen Ashley is and how much I love her and her stories.
Once again, this book was perfection! Another story of first loves being torn apart and coming back together, this book was a little different from the others in The ‘Burg series as it tended to focus more on the family rather than external dramas. Of course there were external dramas going on – crooked cops, psycho exes, a pedophile ring to smash, and the mystery of a past trauma– but it was the relationships between the characters that held the major emphasis. And, as always with KA, it’s the relationships and the emotion that she pours into her pages that makes this book so sensational.
For the first time from KA, the whole book is told from the POV of our hero – Tanner Layne. SWOOOOON!! He is one freakishly swoony Alpha. Yum! I loved having his perspective through the story, seeing first hand all of the emotion that he is going through, watching him be all badass and protective of his family and knowing everything that is motivating him rather than just having to watch from the sidelines. But best of all was seeing him figure out and make his play to get back Rocky, the one girl he has always loved, doing it successfully and then reaping the rewards (loved Rocky’s character by the way – sweet, funny and fiery, and just as desperately in love with Layne as he was with her). I felt incredibly connected to what was going on in the story, and experienced everything right along with him.
Layne knew he was in love with her. Not only that, he’d never stopped loving her. Not once, not for a second, not for twenty-one years.
Fuck him.
…and…
“It’s not fake is it?” Jasper asked softly and Layne studied his son thinking he had vastly underestimated Jasper too.
“It was, Jas, it isn’t anymore.” Jasper nodded. Layne continued. “She doesn’t know that yet, though.”
Jasper stared at him then his mouth twitched before, very slowly, it spread into a smile.
Layne getting back with his Rocky, is the book’s main story, but there is also a huge focus on his relationship with his two teenage sons – Jasper and Tripp. These guys were just brilliant! Essentially the younger versions of KA Alphas, they had some amazing moments in the book. I loved them both, their relationship with their Dad, with each other, with their girls and, eventually, their very special bond with Rocky. They were incredible!
“Layne walked up to him and put both hands to his son’s neck, giving it a firm squeeze, he looked him in the eyes and whispered, “Fucked up with you, know it, but you’re a fuckin’ good kid despite that and, even though I didn’t have much to do with it, I’m proud of you.” He gave his son’s neck a gentle jerk and finished. “Love you, Bud.”
Colt and Feb, Cal and Vi, Merry, Sully, and the gang from the ‘burg were back, with their families in tow, as well as a few new additions to the cast – most notably Dev, Ryker, and Layne’s mother Vera. And once again KA weaves her magic as all of her characters move in and out of each other’s lives only to all come together for the heart pounding, all action climax, and one very swoony, and blissed-out epilogue.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – KA can do no wrong. I laughed, I cried, I swooned and I squeed. I am absolutely LOVING this series!
5 Stars.
