4 stars!

Love in the Light is the second book in the Hearts in Darkness Duet and the conclusion to Makenna and Caden’s story. This book has the sweet and sexy moments we found in the first book, Hearts in Darkness, but also angst and drama that I wasn’t expecting. While this book ended up warming my heart, it did take some tears to get there.

It’s been about two months since the elevator fiasco that brought Makenna and Caden together. They are happy and figuring out a future together but though things seem great on the outside there is turmoil building on the inside. The tragedy that Caden suffered as a boy has been affecting him more lately which not only messes with his mind but also puts strain on his new relationship.

Makenna is as supportive as ever but what can she do if Caden doesn’t let her in. Stresses in his life bring more pain and guilt to the surface and Caden’s life spirals out of control leaving Makenna questioning everything between them. Will there be a future for Caden and Makenna after all?

This book has more angst, pain, and hurt when compared to the first one. It is not a light and sweet read and focuses on serious matters such as survivor’s guilt and PTSD. This story hurt my heart and I felt so much pain for the things Caden and Makenna had to go through to fight for their happy ending.

I still loved Caden and my heart broke for what he was going through, for what he felt. I can’t imagine experiencing the things he did and how lost and alone he must have felt. I loved that he had people around him that cared for him and prayed he could pull himself together. I loved that even through his pain and suffering he still loved Makenna fiercely and only wanted the best for her.

“You own me, Red. Do you know that? …There isn’t a part of me that isn’t yours completely.”

Makenna showed her strength throughout the book. She supported and loved Caden unconditionally and understood most of what he was going through. But here was only so much she truly knew when he became closed off. I felt her broken heart and wished I could shed light on the situation.

She didn’t love him despite of all his issues, she loved him because of them…because they were part of who he was. And she loved who he was. With everything she had.

There was a lot of drama in this book and for the most part, I was OK with it. The drama at Thanksgiving could have been full of stupid actions but it wasn’t as bad as I thought. The other drama in the book was a little over the top, but again I think it fit well with the story.

Overall, Love in the Light was an enjoyable conclusion to a beautiful, surprising love story and left a smile on my face and my heart warm.

“…it’s you and me, ’til the end. In the darkness and in the light.”

*Side Note: I listened to the audible version of Love in the Light and I thoroughly enjoyed it!!
