5 ass-kicking, Seth-loving stars

Fast paced, action-packed and full of the action, humour, romance and brilliant banter that is the reason why JLA is the queen of YA/NA PNR. I wasn’t expecting to love this book as much as I did, but I should have known better because it was absolutely fantastic!

The first in the Titan series, this is a spin off from JLA’s Covenant series, so make sure you read those books first because it’s a complex world and there has been A LOT of stuff go down that it helps to know beforehand.

Set a year after the ending of Sentinel, Seth is still at the mercy of the Gods, carrying out all kinds of violent and nasty retribution against those that stood against them in the last big battle. And then Apollo comes to him with a new assignment – a new threat has arisen, and Seth is charged with protecting college student, Josie (somebody who knows nothing about Seth’s world, but who is of vital importance to its future) and bringing her to safety.

Josie is seemingly your average girl. She hasn’t had the easiest of lives, but she’s smart, sensible, and well adjusted. When Seth rocks up claiming to be an “Apollyon” and telling her tales of Gods, Titans, Halves and Pures, she has no clue what he’s talking about, but when she is brutally and unexpectedly drawn into his world, she puts her trust in him.

I love Josie! As an innocent who has no idea about the world of Gods, let alone her role in it, she does a remarkable job at adjusting to her new reality. She’s brave, stubborn and determined, and she’s exactly what Seth needs, and the banter between them is absolutely gold! Seth is at his arrogant, sarcastic best, and Josie can definitely hold her own, and the chemistry between them is evident from the very beginning. And as the two of them face violence, danger and death, their attraction continues to build and the developing love story is sensational!

“I’ve never had anything that was my own,” he said against my mouth. “Nothing that was ever for just me and no one else. I’ve never been anyone’s first.” He kissed me and then lifted his head. I stared into his eyes. “I’ve never been anyone’s only.”
That made my heart ache for him as I raised my hand, pressing my palm against his cheek. “You’re my first,” I whispered. “You’re…you’re my only.”
His lips parted. “You can’t say that and not mean it.”
I held his gaze as my chest swelled. “I mean it.”
He smoothed his thumb over my lip. “I really am a lucky son of a bitch.”

I was team Aiden the whole way through the Covenant series, but there is something about Seth that is just so addictive. He’s the bad boy, the joker, the arrogant and sarcastic ass that is so easy to love. But seeing him as the hero in his own book, and getting inside of his head for the first time, we get to see just how the events of the previous books impacted on him, and it was fantastically done! He’s so remorseful over all that has happened, and is suffering for all that he went through, and all that Alex went through, and I love that we get to see his vulnerability as finally somebody cares about him for him, and not for who he is or what he is capable of.

He shot forward, clasping my cheeks. “Say it again.”
“Say what?” I replied, gripping his wrists. “I said a lot of things. Help me out here.”
“Say that I’m not just the Apollyon,” he whispered, his voice harsh.
Tears built in my throat. “You’re not just the Apollyon, Seth.”
His eyes drifted shut, his face tensed as his fingers splayed across my cheeks. “I don’t even know who I am anymore. Or what I ever was.”
Oh goodness, that ripped right through my chest. “You’re just…you’re just Seth.”
A tremor moved through his arms. “And you…you’re just my salvation.”

Yes, it’s deep and emotional, and it’s beautifully done, but it’s also so freaking funny! Seth’s sarcastic arrogance is part of his charm, and he is on fire with the quips in this one. There are so many sensational one liners and come backs, I laughed out loud so many times. And add to that the characters that had such a huge impact on the Covenant series – Deacon, Luke, and especially Apollo, and the dynamics are brilliant!

“Your sarcasm and general assholeness are not necessary,” Apollo remarked casually.
I grinned at him. “I don’t think ‘assholeness’ is a word.”

This book is definitely more mature than the Covenant series. The set-up, language and sexual content pushes it very firmly into NA territory, but the transition from one series to the next is seamless. The storyline is very closely linked with the events of the Covenant books, so again, I wouldn’t attempt reading this one without having read those books first, but this book more than holds its own as the start of a new series. Rather than relying on the strength of Alex and Aidan, Seth shines as the hero of the story, and there’s already a great sense of anticipation for what is to come. I can’t wait for more!

Note – I listened to this as an audiobook, and the narration was really good. Although I thought the guy doing Seth sounded more Russian than Greek, and I’d never really thought of Seth as having an accent that strong, but he does a great job with Seth’s snark, and it was a good one to listen to.
