Laini Taylor’s beautifully poetic and descriptive writing takes us back right back into the heart of gothic Prague for this enchanting little addition to one of my all-time favourite series, and a follow on from the incredible Daughter of Smoke & Bone.

It is a story featuring Karou’s best friend, Zuzana, and how she created an incredible first date for herself and Mik (with a little help from the man himself). It’s sweet and romantic, with just a little touch of magic, and a whole heap of awesome as we get inside the head of one of my favourite characters from the series.

“I have not yet elected to bestow the grace of my saliva upon another human being. I have never… kissed anyone.”

Tiny, yet fierce, Zuzana is nicknamed the ‘rabid fairy’, and she has a brilliantly sarcastic and whimsical inner monologue.

“I love vengeance like normal people love sunsets and long walks on the beach. I eat vengeance with a spoon like it’s honey. In fact, I may not even be a real person, but just a vow of vengeance made flesh.”

And Mik is a wonderful match for her.

“I want to do mysterious and improbable things alongside a fierce and beautiful girl who looks like a doll brought to life by a sorcerer.
Is that really so much to ask?”

Captivating and witty, this is the beginning of a beautiful love story, and I drank in every page. Laini Taylor, you are a genius!
