The best loves had to suffer the greatest hardships.
6 brilliant stars!
King of Hearts is the third book in the Hearts series, and though it can be read as a standalone, I recommend reading the prior two first. King is introduced in the second book and characters from the previous books play a big role in this story.
L.H. Cosway has written another epic love story. As always, the writing is beautiful and the story is unique. It is no secret that I love second-chance romances and I have to say that King of Hearts may be my all time favorite in this trope. It is the epitome of an epic love story that contains fierce love, utter heartbreak, sweet forgiveness, and complete redemption. This book has it all. I fell in love right along with the charcters and felt the pain they endured throughout their story. It gave me butterflies, made me giddy, made me laugh out loud, and then broke my heart. Thankfully, it was peiced back together and I was left with the biggest smile on my face.
The story is told entirely from the heroine’s POV and is broken down into two parts: Before and After. From Hearts of Fire, we know King is a broken man whose life is in ruins. He is in a very dark place and it is obvious that he went through something major in his younger years, though we never really get any insight into what happened. The only glimpse into his past comes in the form of a picture. A picture of a beautiful girl. A picture of Alexis. To say I was intrigued by this man is an understatement and I could not wait to get my hands on King of Hearts.
Before
This love story begins with an interview. There’s an immediate attraction between King and Alexis but they think it best to refrain from acting on it do to their employee/employer relationship. Alexis is fresh out of a relationship, and King doesn’t have time for one. And so a friendship is born that is easy and natural, and had me laughing out loud at their banter. The sexual tension and chemistry is off the charts, and when King and Alexis finally give into their desires, it is nothing short of explosive.
He climbed up the bed until his hands were braced on either side of my head.
He sucked in a deep breath, his eyes traveling back and forth between mine as he swiped his thumb across my bottom lip. His voice was husky as he spoke. “The way you come is fucking devastating.”
The way he spoke was fucking devastating.
King and Alexis are perfect for each other. Their relationship is effortless. They both are strong, confident, supportive, loving, and give as good as they get. They are brutally honest and compliment each other. They love completely. King had it all until one fateful night changes everything. Unable to shoulder the guilt, he walks away.
“Shame. Pain. Loss. Fear. More shame.
So much fucking shame I could barely breathe with it.”
After
Fast forward six years. Alexis is a sucessful business owner, running a modeling agency. Life had been hard since King vanished but she picked herself up from the past and moved on. That is until a letter sends her reeling. King is alive. Seeing him won’t be easy, but she knows if there is even a small possibility of geting him back, she is taking it.
The reunion is nothing like she imagined, and as painful as it is, Alexis knows she has her work cut out for her.
I was already concocting plans, figuring out ways in which I might bring him back to his old self. Even though it had taken years, finding him had been the easy part. Healing him would be the greatest challenge I’d ever faced.
She is strong though and fights for their love. They still have a lot to go through to get back to where they were, but their love is true and they grow as they come back together.
“I never stopped loving you, not even in my darkest hour.”
The epilogue was a wonderful ending to Alexis and King’s story. Told from King’s POV, we see snipits of the past and also the beautiful future.
She saw me for all I was, and I saw her for all she was. The story in the music of all we’d been through wasn’t pretty, and yet, in that moment I wouldn’t wish to be anyone other than who I was right then. I was glad for my experiences, good and bad. I was glad for what they had made me.
And I was glad that I hadn’t had one life, but that I’d had many.
I absolutley loved this book and it is definitely a favorite of mine for 2015! L.H. Cosway is a master at writing brilliant love stories with so much emotion that it affects the reader completely. I laughed, loved, cried, swooned and was left with a warm heart. She writes her characters with such depth and creates stories that will stay with me forever. Her side characters were a wonderful addition to the book and I loved seeing Jay, Matilda, Jack and Lille again. They helped bring Alexis and King together and stood by them, supported them when King and Alexis needed them most. I highly recommend the Hearts series if you havent read it yet. Though I love the whole series, this is my favorite book so far!
