4 stars!
I love this series. It’s shifted from NA to adult, but the emotionally intense, dramatic stories have remained, as have the gorgeously romantic heartfelt love stories. This one is a childhood friends-to-lovers romance featuring Jillian and Brock – both of who were introduced earlier in the series – and I was easily swept up into their chemistry-filled, slow-burning romance.
Jillian’s family took Brock in when he was a teenager, and the two of them were the best of friends as they grew up. Jillian fell in love with him early on, but Brock was several years older and never really showed an interest in her, but that didn’t detract her from being his shadow. On the night that she had planned for everything to change for them, he broke her heart and she was almost killed in a brutal attack. That night destroyed everything between Jillian and Brock, and it changed Jillian’s life forever.
Six years later and though Jillian is mostly physically recovered, she has lost a piece of herself and she still isn’t back to the girl she once was. But she is taking the first step of reclaiming her life back by accepting a job at her family’s hugely successful physical training business. What she wasn’t expecting though, was for Brock to come walking back into her life. At Jillian’s request, he has left her alone in the years since her attack, but he is back now – working with her, and determined to make her a part of his life again.
I love childhood friends-to-lovers romance, and this one is a beautifully emotional and intense story. Jillian is still hurt by Brock’s actions in the past (and justifiably so!), but she can’t help the way she feels for him, and all of the emotion she’s had for him is still very much there. And for the first time, Brock seems to reciprocate her feelings, inserting himself into Jillian’s life and opening up to her like he has never done before.
My eyes searched his. “Did you… did you miss me this whole time?”
I drew in a shallow breath. “I missed you.”
Brock’s gaze held mine. “Missed you every fucking day, Jillian, with every ounce of who I am.”
It’s a slow developing coming together as they catch up on all that they’ve been through in their time apart and work to overcome the hurt and guilt between them. There are ups and downs, sweet moments, laughs and emotional confrontations, and a whole lot of UST as they rediscover each other and finally explore everything that is between them.
“I loved you when I was eight. I loved you when I was twelve. I loved you when I was twenty, and I… I love you now.”
I really enjoyed this book. I loved Jillian and her strength and perseverance. She’s survived and thrived despite all that she has been through, she is smart and funny, and she’s kept her beautiful heart through it all. Brock had his douchey moments, and I wasn’t happy with the way he treated Jillian in the past, but now that he’s back he’s absolutely committed to winning her, and I loved the no-nonsense way he was there for her and laid claim to her after all of this time.
“I love you because you have this fire in you that you don’t even recognise, but I do. You’re strong and you’re a survivor.”
The characters from the previous books of the series all appear, and I loved catching up with them all. This is such a great bunch, and I love them all together in a group, and seeing where they are all at as they live out their HEAs.
This is a great read. Dramatic and emotional with a sexy, heartfelt romance, I loved it.
4 stars.
