Wow! I was after an intense, angsty mindfuck of a read, and that’s exactly what I got! It’s intense, it’s shocking, and it’s heartbreaking, and it will leave you questioning everything.
Yes, this is a book about a kidnapping – Caleb takes Olivia with the intention of training her and selling her into sexual slavery, all as part of a revenge plot that has driven him his entire life. But there is also an intriguing power struggle that goes on as the characters reveal themselves and events take place in the story that shift the dynamic between captor and captive.
I liked Olivia as a character, and seeing her cope, and ultimately come to terms with what she is going through is truly heartbreaking. But it was Caleb’s POV that I really loved, because it put a completely different spin on the story. And that is where the questions begin – What is right and wrong? Can somebody’s behaviour be justified and forgiven because of their past? Can there be a HEA, and more importantly – does Caleb deserve one?
If you are thinking of reading this, don’t go into it assuming it’s going to be a romantic ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ story, because it’s not. It’s dark and it’s disturbing, but it is a fantastically written book! It ends on a huge cliffhanger, I can’t wait to get my hands on book 2.
