Five seconds.
A deafening blast. Pain. Silence.

That was all it took for an IED to end my life as I knew it. The man I was shattered in a
hard wave of sound and debris that rained down on me like death itself.
And six months later, after waking up to an inescapable hell, I found myself wishing that death had found me.
Until her.

Miranda Jacobs swept into my life like a cool breeze on a smoldering day.
With her smart mouth and her ridiculous jokes, she brought me back to life one minute at a time.

Turned out time wasn’t on our side.

Five seconds.

Screams. Twisted metal. Silence.

And I’d lost it all again—only this time, I had no one to blame but myself.

“No regrets, only happiness.”

4.5 stars

This book follows on from the beautiful See Through Heart, though it can easily standalone. It’s a fun, sexy, slow-burning romance with a wonderful heroine, a broody, tortured hero and a heart-wrenching story that made me feel everything.

Miranda is the best friend of Austin and Ainsley from See Through Hearth. In that book she absolutely shone as the fun and hilarious romance-book-lover who lives her life just the way she wants it, dreaming of finding that someone special, and I love venturing back into her world because she is pure awesome and wonderfully relatable. Miranda’s latest favourite hobby is spying on her new hot and broody neighbour, and she’s turned it into an art form.

I’d never seen the man smile in the month he’d been living next door to me and for some reason that made me all the hotter for him. He owned that scowl. He freaking rocked it.

Holden Steel is an ex-Army Ranger who is struggling, physically and emotionally, to come to terms with the tragic losses he experience on his last deployment, and his new civilian life. He is angry, frustrated, anxious and tormented by grief, with no idea what to do with his life. And then along comes Miranda with her perky cheerfulness and smart mouth, who slowly starts to change everything.

I love the dynamic between these two. Initially full of snark because Holden is such a broody bastard, Miranda’s persistence in forcing her way into his life leads to some great encounters and fantastic banter, and she slowly starts to weasel her way in. And Holden has no idea what he’s in for as his gorgeous neighbour starts to work her way under his skin.

Where are your pants?” I shouted a little louder than I intended.
She pulled the pillow off her face long enough to look at me and narrow her eyes before covering her face again and answering. “It’s my policy. The no pants policy. And this is my apartment. So if you don’t like my policies, you should leave.”
I felt my eyes widen. “You have a policy that you don’t wear pants when you’re at home?”
“Correct,” she confirmed.
“I should stop by more often,” I mumbled.

Underneath it all their attraction sizzles away, and every moment of their time together is absolutely delicious as they flirt, banter, fight and tease, all while their emotional connection to each other grows until they completely fall for each other, and it’s just gorgeous!

I laid my forehead to hers, breathing hard. Fuck, I wanted her. I wanted her more than anything in the entire world. “’I’m not good for you, baby. I don’t know what I’m doing. I don’t know what this thing is between us. I just know I don’t want it to stop.”

And hot! Did I mention the hotness? So freaking hot. All underpinned with a growing emotion that they are powerless to stop – despite Holden’s fears of what that means.

God, I wanted her to be mine. But I wasn’t in any shape to take anyone as mine. I was a mess. I couldn’t get through a day without pain and anxiety meds.
I had nothing to give this beautiful woman who could give me the world.

This is a beautifully unfolding love story. Well paced and realistic, I could feel the emotion between Miranda and Holden, and I loved seeing Miranda break down Holden’s walls as he hopelessly and helplessly falls under her spell. But Holden has demons that he hasn’t dealt with, and when they threaten to overwhelm him, the repercussions could destroy everything that they have found together.

“You’re my best friend in the world. You’re my everything.”

I loved this book. I was completely enthralled from the very beginning – from Miranda’s complete obsession with all things romance to her quick wit and sense of fun, she knows who she is and she openly embraces it, and I loved that about her! Broody Holden stole my heart, it ached for him, but he owned it all the same, and I wanted to reach into my kindle and hold him. The progression of the relationship is beautiful, the sexy time is steamy hot and the emotion is beautifully written. I could feel everything right alongside them, and I couldn’t put the book down.

I loved it! 4.5 stars
