3.5 “not quite a cowboy” stars
Suffering from a nasty breakup and dealing with issues with work, Leora and her best friend, Emrys, go on an unplugged outdoor adventure in Sheridan, WY. Sutton, Lane, and Cyrus are the three Warner brothers who run the ranch and outdoor adventure company that will be responsible for Leora and Emrys over the next week. Sutton is the grumpy one, Lane is the friendly one, and Cyrus is the brooding one who is the hardest to read. There’s an interesting group of people who are joining them on the trip and when they run into unexpected trouble, everyone must work together to get through the adventure unharmed.
I really enjoyed Retreat. The plot is entertaining and the characters have depth. Leo has been hurt badly in the past by not only her ex but also another person who should have been there for her. She guards her heart, refusing to let anyone in except Emrys. I felt her pain and understood her insecurities, and I loved that Emrys was there for her supporting her and encouraging her to move on from the pain.
“The right guy isn’t going to just make you burn, he’s going to scorch all that useless shit inside of you, turning it into nothing but ash, once and for all.”
Though I enjoyed Leo, I felt at times the internal monologue was a bit long winded. I wanted more out in the open and less inside her head.
Cyrus squeezed a whole lot of hot alpha badass goodness in a built sexy body. His past was saddening and I could feel the pain he dealt with. He doesn’t open up easily and even if he was broody and hardly ever smiled, he was protective of people he cared about and had a sweet side that will make you swoon.
“I’ve always managed to keep my feet under me. No matter what hit me, I stood standing. You left and I fell to my knees, Sunshine.”
Cyrus and Leo are great together. He pushes and challenges her, encouraging her to step outside her comfort zone while she ended up being exactly what he needed. The electric tension between Leo and Cyrus was palpable and they sure know how to crank up the heat. Delicious tension gets your blood pumping and they are not shy together. I liked watching them slowly begin to trust each other and their banter was entertaining.
“You pissed me off and turned me on the second you opened your mouth. I knew in that second, that for whatever reason, you were here for me. We only get this moment, Sunshine, just one, so it needs to matter to you as much as it matters to me.”
There’s more than just the romance and the action and suspense that was added to the mix was exciting. It provided a great set up to the next book in the Getaway series, Shelter. Overall, it was an enjoyable read and I can’t wait to get more of the Warner brothers!
