Blurb
From New York Times Bestselling author, K. Bromberg, comes the second standalone book in the Everyday Heroes series. Just how hot will firefighter Grady Malone turn up the heat?
Songwriter Dylan McCoy has been burned.
By her boyfriend she found in her bed . . . with someone else.
By the contract she signed that obligates her to work with him until the songs for his new album are complete.
By her agent when she asked Dylan to keep their breakup on the down-low.
When she finds herself in Sunnyville, she refuses to let her new roommate burn her too. Still . . . a rebound has never looked so good.
That’s her first thought when she sees firefighter Grady Malone.
Sexy. Charismatic. Unapologetic. He’s a man who carries his own scars—the ones on his back, the survivor’s guilt on his soul, and the fear in his heart.
When an unexpected visitor puts their roommate status to the test, will their undeniable attraction burn out, or will they both take a chance and play with fire?

4.5 stars!!
“Love is rarely pretty. It’s messy. It’s complicated. It’s often ugly, but that’s how you know when it’s right. Pretty doesn’t always last. It’s the things you have to work at that make the reward that much sweeter.”
Dylan McCoy is a songwriter whose heart is broken when she walks in on her boyfriend, Jett, with another woman. Unfortunately, because they are in the middle of working on an album, her agent tells her she needs to continue to write songs with him. The last thing she wants is to be face to face with the cheater, so with a need for a change of scenery, she calls her brother to help her situation.
Grady Malone, a sexy fireman whose been through a lot over the past years, doesn’t do relationships. He likes things casual and is not looking for something permanent. When his friend’s sister needs a place to crash, he is quick to offer his extra room without a second thought, and he doesn’t know what hits him when he first lays eyes on his new roommate, Dylan. There’s something refreshing about her that catches his eye but he knows he can’t act on his attraction. However, things change when Dylan’s ex shows up on Grady’s doorstep. Dylan and Grady decide to play house to get back at Jett but when their fake relationship turns into so much more, their feelings become too much to handle. Is there a chance for Dylan and Grady to find their HEA when so much stands in their way?
Combust is sweet, sexy, and fun, and way more emotional that I had expected. There is pain, suffering, and ongoing heartbreak that tore me up inside but there is a beautiful love story with healing and self-discovery, and when the love between Dylan and Grady was blooming, my heart warmed.
Dylan was crushed when she walks in on her boyfriend. I felt her pain and the conflict she experienced when she needed to work with him and the difficulties those emotions bring to the table. Another thing Dylan is dealing with is her attraction to Grady. Her past shaped her to be the person she is and she has conflicting feelings about firemen making her feelings towards Grady stronger as she tries to fight them. I loved getting into her head when she was thinking about Grady and I totally fell for as she did.
Smoking hot with a jaw dropping, ripped body, Grady is sex on a stick. He is also gorgeous on the inside with his big, sweet, protective heart. He cares deeply about the people who mean something to him and he never wants to let them down. However, he has ghosts that haunt him nightly. I loved watching his past unfold even though it was heartbreaking. The emotion was well-written and intense. I didn’t want him to hurt the way he did, and the guilt, regret, and pain crushed me.
When Dylan moves in with Grady, he could not have known the impact she would have on his life and I loved watching them together. Dylan offers Grady an escape from the turmoil he lives and I felt the effect she had on him.
“I’m getting lost in you, Dylan. It’s so damn easy. When I’m with you, I forget the bad…So, I’m kissing you because when I’m with you, my mind stops, and the world starts turning again.”
I loved how their feelings snuck up on them. Their relationship isn’t easy as it develops. It’s emotional and heartbreaking at times but I loved how things play out. The fun banter lighted the heavy aspects of the story and the sexy times lit the pages on fire.
It takes a second for my mind to catch up to what my body is already reacting to—the onslaught of everything that is Grady Malone.
Because this isn’t a let’s-play-house kiss.
Oh no.
This is a take-no-prisoners, no-holds-barred kiss.
They were functional even though they had flaws, and their vulnerabilities challenged them as a couple. I think that the way they approached their relationship fit with everything going on in their lives and the progression is believable. The angst is well-placed and not over the top. The fear and reservations Grady had about starting a relationship were very real and Dylan’s understanding was endearing.
Dylan and Grady’s growth both as a couple and individually developed nicely. Grady and Dylan had to work through their own challenges and I loved how they supported and pushed each other by truly being there for one another. They needed to feel comfortable in their own skin, accept who they are and love themselves before they could ever truly love another, and watching both discover the truth was rewarding.
I enjoyed the epilogue and it was the perfect conclusion to Dylan and Grady’s story. Overall, Combust was an emotional journey, and I loved it!!
I have to give a shout out to the Malone family. They are amazing! They have such an wonderful support system and their love for each other is heartwarming. I loved seeing Grant and Emerson again (from Cuffed), and getting a little more about Grayson, whose story, Cockpit, releases later this year. I can’t wait for more of K. Bromberg’s Everyday Heroes!
