I’m a big Callie Hart fan, and she has delivered a great story that is dark and deliciously dirty, but also unexpectedly funny. I was hooked from the very beginning as we are introduced to her latest unforgettable hero – badass hitman, Felix ‘Fix’ Marcosa – and I loved this fast-paced, exciting and surprising story.
I didn’t know going in that this is the first book in a new trilogy, so be aware that it’s not a standalone, and that there is a cliffy ending.
Sera Lafferty is in the middle of a cross-country road trip to get to her sister’s wedding, when she gets stranded in the middle of a small town in the middle of nowhere due to bad weather. When she rocks up to the only place in town with available beds, she runs into fellow traveller, tall, dark and dangerous Fix Marcosa in the lobby, and when they discover that there is only one room available, they have no other choice but to share it.
From the very beginning, the dynamic between Fix and Sera is electric. The banter is quick, witty and so much fun, and influenced by their strong physical attraction to each other, and I laughed out loud at their fiery conversation and wicked teasing.
“I’m gonna go to sleep soon. Don’t even think about trying to climb into bed with me. It’s a sure fire way of getting yourself castrated.”
“Please. You know you want to sleep with me, Sera Lafferty. You wanted to sleep with me the moment you set eyes on me.”
A slow, frankly unnerving smile spread across her face. She was beginning to look like a woman who really would tear a guy’s dick off for climbing into bed with her. “You have a very high opinion of yourself, Fix.”
I grinned back at her, flashing her my teeth. “Of course I do. I’m really fucking awesome.”
Fix is, indeed, really fucking awesome. He’s smart, funny and seriously sexy, and he has a take-no-shit, say it like it is mentality, which is lots of fun. And smartass Sera is right there with him, returning quips like a champion. And it’s all so freaking entertaining!
“My dick’s pretty fucking phenomenal. You should see it. Grown women have been known to weep when they behold it.”

“I’m sure your dick is magnificent,” I said, groaning under my breath. “I’m sure women across the country have carved wooden replicas of it that they worship daily. It’s probably the most stunning cock to have ever gotten a boner. But I’m gonna pass this time.”
The sexual tension is thick, and builds a delicious chemistry between them, and they end up sharing a hot and steamy encounter which rocks both of their worlds. But there is so much about Fix that Sera doesn’t know. And when she realises exactly who and what he is, she knows she needs to get away…. if only she could.
Fix. A creature made out of shadows and light. A dream, and a nightmare rolled into one. He was both sides of a coin toss, consequence and reward. I wanted to kiss him so badly right then that my lips ached. I wanted to run away from him, screaming, just as badly.
It’s a great set up, and when Fix demands that he join Sera on her trip to her sister’s wedding, posing as her date no less, it just gets better. There are lots of laughs, continued banter and teasing, and so much sexual tension it practically drips off the page. But we also get to look into both of their pasts, and there is a lot of darkness there. They have been through hard times, and though different, they are both lifechanging and devastating. But their experiences have shaped who they have become, and everything begins to change for them as they start to learn more about each other.
I’d done some stupid, messed up things as a teenager. I’d done equally stupid, reckless things after … but nothing in my life had ever gotten me as high as Sera Lafferty. She was the light that flowed in my veins. She was the oxygen in my lungs. She was the fuel that fired my heart.
See! There is some unexpected sweetness underneath that gruff and over-confident veneer. And the romance that develops is gorgeous! It’s not a conventional love story, that’s for sure, with a whole lot of baggage and a mix of emotions at play, but I still felt the growing feelings between Fix and Sera, and I loved the way it all played out.
“I’m your addiction, just as much as you’re mine. I’m toxic for you. I know that. If I were a better man, I’d let you go. But I’m not.”
Like I said, the story ends on a cliffhanger, but it’s not too painful. It’s something that I could see coming, but that still makes a huge impression, and will shift the story going forward, and I can’t wait to see where it’s all going to go from here!
He cupped my face in his hand, stroking the pad of his thumb over the line of my cheekbone. “You’re fucking mine,” he groaned. “You don’t need to worry anymore. You’re safe. I won’t let anyone hurt you. I’ll fucking flay the skin off anyone who tries to lay a finger on you.”
I loved this one! Dirty and sexy with lots of laugh-out-loud moments, but with nicely developed emotion and dark undertones that give the whole story a deliciously wicked feeling. I absolutely loved it and I can’t wait for more!
