4.5 stars!

A fast-moving, exciting, suspenseful and romantic PNR read, I loved this one!

This is the second book in the Hunter Legacy series, but it can easily be read as a standalone. Cain was introduced in the first book of this series, Born of Darkness, but I honestly could not remember him at all, and I was able to pick up this story and get completely caught up in all of the action and excitement with no problems at all.

Cain is a member of the Breed, a vampire known as a Hunter. Cruelly bred in a laboratory to become a lethal, ruthless assassin, he was a prisoner until he and others of his kind were freed from their captivity around 20 years ago. He’s still finding his place in the world, and following a job in Las Vegas that went bad, he has escaped to Miami for some quiet time, but he ends up finding a whole lot of trouble.

Marina is the niece of a Russian banker with ties to the mob. She has travelled to America from St Petersburg to bargain for a way out for the two of them, and she’s carrying a super-sensitive bargaining chip – one that has placed a huge target on her back. A fact that is proven when she is literally snatched from the path of a sniper’s bullet by a mysterious stranger. Though terrified and shaken, she’s immediately drawn to the gorgeous Breed male, but she won’t let anything interfere with her mission so she does her best to keep him out of her business. That’s fine with Cain, who wants nothing to do with her, but when he discovers that she is a Breedmate, one of the rare and chosen few females who are able to mate and produce children with a vampire, he feels honor-bound to protect her at all costs.

And the stage is set for the adventure to come as, despite them both trying to keep their distance, Cain steps in to protect Marina from the multiple dangers that she’s facing. All of that complicated by their wild attraction that stirs all kinds of feelings that neither of them are prepared to deal with.

“I wish I was the kind of male who could walk away from you. I wish like hell I had more honor, because despite the mark that should be enough to make me keep my distance – despite the fact that you’re withholding information that might get you killed on my watch – the only thing I can’t seem to do where you’re concerned is walk the fuck away.”

I love these characters! Marina is a wonderfully strong heroine who is protective of her loved ones. She’s prepared to fight for what she wants, and I loved seeing her prove that over and over throughout the story. And Cain is a perfect blend of emotionally vulnerable alpha badass. His Breed ‘gift’ curses him with the foresight to see people’s deaths before they happen – just not anybody that he’s emotionally attached to, something that he learned the hard way. So though he wants Marina more than he’s wanted anything, in order to protect her, he knows he needs to keep his distance… but we all know how that’s going to go!

She was extraordinary, and not only because she was the first woman – the only woman – who challenged him on every level. She made him crave something he’d never thought he could have.
A partner.
An equal.
A future where he wasn’t alone.
Fuck. He was in real trouble here.

The mystery/suspense part of the storyline is fantastic, with twists and turns that keep things interesting and that lead to some great action and excitement!

And, of course, there is the love story which is both gorgeous and sexy as all hell. There’s a strong emotional connection between Cain and Marina which develops really nicely as the story progresses, and I loved watching them fall and fall hard for each other.

“I love you,” she whispered, moving deeper into his arms. “Please, don’t ever let me go.”
He held her close. “Baby, not a chance.”

We are introduced to Cain’s Hunter brothers, the only family he’s known, and OMG what a fantastic bunch! I love these boys, each so different with their own distinct personalities. I love seeing them all interact together, and I can only hope that we’ll get to revisit with them in this series.

As always, Lara Adrian has delivered a solid read that kept me glued to my kindle from start to finish. It’s exciting and romantic, and full of the PNR action that I love about her books. I loved it.

4.5 stars.
