Ruthless King is the first book I have read by Maya Hughes and it won’t be my last. Full of emotion, healing, and heart, this sweet, swoony, sexy romance will make you believe in second chances.

I really liked Avery. She works so hard and puts her family before everything else in her life. She is always going, never taking a moment for herself. Her strength, determination, and perseverance makes her endearing and I love that she never backs down when faced with the past no matter how much it still haunts her.

Those memories didn’t end with a smile. They ended with a sharp ache so deep I wondered if it would ever heal.

Avery crushed Emmett and he has never recovered. Even hearing her name is too much for him to bear. I understood his pain and anger. I felt for him because of the heartbreaking way things ended. There was no healing and the emotion is still very real.

I was an Avery junkie falling off the wagon after four years.

When Emmett and Avery are thrown together after the years apart they, are electric. The sexual tension is off the charts and they heat they produce can catch pages on fire. But there is so much to work through even if the physical stuff is better than ever. It’s the emotion that is involved when hearts break and finding their way back to each other is far from easy. They are hurt and broken and the trust that was shattered long ago is still in pieces.

The achy, trembling, raw feeling was clawing its way out of my chest. We were a powder keg drenched in lighter fluid on top of a bonfire.

I knew there was more to the story because Avery was such a wonderful person. I was eager to learn the truth and when I did, GAH, I don’t know what I would have done in that situation. It was frustrating and angering but also understandable in some ways. It was a difficult situation that could have been handled better but I loved reading the flashbacks as the whole story unfolded.

“I didn’t need any of it. I didn’t want any of it. All I needed was you.”

Overall, Emmett and Avery’s story was an enjoyable second-chance romance and pulled me into the Kings of Rittenhouse series. I will definitely go back and read the first two books because I can’t wait to see how the other Kings find love!
