Back to the Realm we go, and I freaking LOVE being back in this world! This is book 9 of the Dark Protectors series, the second book in the new story arc which began in Vampire’s Faith. So definitely don’t go into this one without at least a little bit of background. This is the long-awaited story of Logan Kyllwood (young brother of Zane), a fast-moving, action-packed story and I loved it.
Logan is a vampire-demon hybrid, and one of the deadliest fighters in the Realm (a collective group of allied supernaturals). In the last book of the series, we saw him and best friend Garrett accepted into a secretive and exclusive group called ‘the seven’ – a group of warriors tasked with protecting the world from a deadly threat. Garrett is already a member, and Logan’s initiation will complete the group, and he is gearing up to undergo the mystical, potentially deadly ceremony.
Mercy is fae – a new species introduced to the series. The fae as a people are not well known to the Realm, often thought of as mythical, and as a race they are facing extinction. The most pressing matter for the fae though is the re-emergence of the seven, which they believe will have devastating consequences for the entire universe. Mercy is just one of the fae tasked with stopping the powerful group, and she takes it upon herself to kidnap Logan to prevent him from becoming one of them and completing their mystical group.
This book is a wild ride of action, excitement and intrigue, and it moves at a terrific pace. From the moment that Logan and Mercy meet there is barely a moment to breathe as they run, fight, chase and argue.
“I won’t let them hurt you, Mercy.”
She drew back, her eyes widening. “You won’t seem to understand.” Leaning forward again, she dropped her voice to a whisper. “We’re enemies, Logan.”
The action is great but it’s all about the romance for me, and OMG there is so much back and forth between these two! They are both driven by their pre-determined destinies, which put them on opposite sides with lots of secrets between them, but they share a mystical bond and a whole lot of lusty attraction, and it’s all swept up into an exciting and intense ride as they figure it all out.
“You’re different, and I think you know it. There’s more to us, and it’s a fucking tragedy that we can’t explore further what we could have.”</>
Honestly, it got a bit frustrating at times, and I wanted to smack Mercy for her constant running, which all became a bit repetitive. But romantic, determined, alpha Logan is definitely a treat and all of that intensity creates sizzling chemistry and the sexy time is really freaking hot.
“I’ve never had anything in this life that was just mine, darlin’.”
She tilted her head to the side, her noise lightly brushing his. “I’m not yours.”
But she could be.
This book has a touch of the mystical about it, with lots of talk of dimension-jumping and other worlds adding a lot of interest and will lead to some really great storylines in the rest of the series. And to increase the awesome, we get to touch base with the characters we met in the last book of the series, Logan’s brothers (including Janie and Hope), and the King of the Realm himself in all of his glory.
“I’ll start.” The king placed large hands on the table, his voice pleasant and very peaceful.
Mercy relaxed a little. It was nice to be around a calming influence for once.
The king leaned forward. “What the holy fuck of a fuckup of a disaster have you assholes gotten into?” Dage yelled, his booming voice echoing off every wall.
The story continues to build towards an exciting showdown that will be coming later in the series, and I’m really enjoying the build-up. I love that we get to know more about the seven in this book, and I’m excited for their stories to be told in their own books.
So yeah, a little frustrating perhaps, but still a great read.
4 stars.
