“It hadn’t escaped my attention that I preferred to spend time with the undead rather than the living. I tried not to think about what that said about me.”
Hmmmm, I think I feel the same because I’ve got to confess that I am a little bit addicted to the brilliantly original supernatural world that Amy Plum has created. So much so that even after feeling a little underwhelmed by the first book in the series, Die For Me, I plunged straight ahead into this one, and I’m really glad I did.
The beginning of the book focusses on the characters settling into life after the events of the first book, and delves a little bit deeper into the world of Revenants – a species of undead who are compelled to save lives, and are addicted to dying for others, only to ‘reanimate’ three days later. With the introduction of new characters, more of the history and the workings of the Revenant world are revealed, and I found this really fascinating.
The storyline picks up in the second half of the book when Numa, the bad guys, come back into play. There are attacks, break ins, fighting and betrayal as we try to figure out who the bad guy is, what they are after, and just what the hell is going on with Vincent!
I was a lot more comfortable with Kate and Vincent in this book, as they were past their insta-love, and in a strong relationship. Having promised to be extraordinary for her, Vincent certainly knows how to show a girl a good time! His and Kate’s moments together were very special, the interactions were mature and functional, and there were some gorgeously swoony moments. I also loved seeing them together when Vincent was ‘volant’ (where his body is dead and he is floating around as a spirit), and that even though he’s not really ‘there’, he was with Kate whenever he could be. Having said that though, all of the secret keeping got a little out of hand there for a bit, with both of them off on their own little crusades, but I liked that they came clean with each other in the end.
Ambrose, Jules and Georgia were all a brilliant part of the action, providing many LOL moments, and the Paris setting was again a highlight for me, so beautifully portrayed, and such a prominent part of the story.
One final word – Cliffhanger. WTF??? What a way to finish a book! I had seen a spoiler so I sort of knew what was coming but not the details. Although I actually really liked the way it all played out. The big reveal and the action was intense, and afterwards the reader is left gutted, and then there is a shiny, shimmering ray of hope.
I can’t wait for the release of the third and final book in March to get the resolution of this extraordinary story.
