After an excruciating wait for this book, Amy Plum has delivered her Revenants finale, and I can honestly say it totally delivers. There is action, heartbreak and, of course, a gorgeously swoony romance, all beautifully written with lots of emotion – I was in tears more than once while reading (happy and sad tears).
I’m not going to say much about the storyline so that I don’t spoil anything for anybody that hasn’t read the series, but the book picks up immediately after the HIDEOUS cliffhanger of Until I Die, and the story follows our heroine, Kate, and her Revenant buddies as they dive straight into action-mode, dealing with the fallout from the big cliffie, and trying to find their way forward.
With Kate in full-on tenacious, badass mode, the story dives further into Revenant lore as the gang search for answers – “well, that felt very Indiana Jones-ish” – yep, it totally does! And even though there are the occasional ‘OMG, what a coincidence!’ moments, as well as a fairly predictable ending, the ride to get there twists and turns all over the place and is full of ups and downs. And with some surprises thrown in and a few fist-pump moments, I was kept enthralled the whole way through.
Like the previous books in the series, the story is told entirely from Kate’s POV, but there is lots of time spent with all of the characters that we’ve come to know and love – Georgia, Jules, Ambrose, Charlotte, Charles, Arthur, JB and Gaspard all have lots of page time, and there is a lot of development in their stories.
And, of course, there’s Vincent, our gorgeous, devoted, loving and protective hero…
“Whatever happens, remember that I will love you forever … whatever is left of me will never stop loving you.”
SWOOOOOON! Oh Vincent, how I love you! Big things happened for him in the last book and, of course, devoted readers will be clamouring to read this one to find out how that all ends up.
There is a HEA, but I will say that there is not a HEA for everybody. Amidst the happy ending, there is heartache and sadness, but (as I wiped my tears), I felt satisfied. I like that Plum didn’t tie everything up in a happy little bow, it makes the ending a bit more realistic. And although not everybody is ecstatically happy at the end of the book, I was really happy with how it ended. And as for Kate…
I have really enjoyed this series, and highly recommend it to anybody who is after a refreshingly unique YA paranormal story with great characters, action, drama, humour, and a beautiful YA romance.
4.5 stars.
