I loved this book! A sweet, steamy, exciting and romantic story between a warrior bred for violence, and a woman fighting for her family. This is the third book in the Hunter Legacy series, but it can easily be read as a standalone, with very minimal character crossover and enough background given to catch you up on the world. And for fans such as myself, it’s a great opportunity to go back to the Breed world that I love so much.
Knox is a Hunter – a first generation Breed (vampire) male bred in a laboratory and raised to be a heartless, soulless killer. It’s been years since he and those like him escaped their captivity and he’s tried to settle into a normal life, and he almost had happiness until tragedy tore it away. Now, he’s a man with no home and no mission, just aimlessly traveling the country until bad weather drives him into a diner in a small town in rural Maine.
Leni was born and raised in Parrish Falls where she runs her family’s diner and raises her 5-year-old nephew. Her sister disappeared shortly after his birth, and she has been threatened by the most powerful family in town since she took the boy in. But now there is real danger approaching for both her and little Travis. Luckily there’s a big, brave warrior in town to step in help!
Knox may be a ruthless killer, but he knows what’s right and what’s wrong, and when he sees Leni in trouble, he jumps in to help. When he learns about the extent of the danger, he decides to hang around and plants himself into her life to protect her and Travis.
Selfish. Solitary. Savage. Those were the things that best defined him.
Not softness. Not sympathy.
Not some twisted urge to be a saviour to the fierce-hearted beauty and the innocent child sleeping so trustingly under the guard of a man who’d been raised a soulless monster.
It’s a great setup, and it’s not too long before things get complicated when the closed-off warrior begins to feel more than a sense of protection towards the woman desperate for his help. I’ve gotta admit, the romance started a bit quickly for me, and that shift came as a bit of a surprise. There was very little build up and I wasn’t really feeling the chemistry up until that point, but once they made the leap, I was right on board and loved watching these two come together.
“Tell me what it is you needed, sweetheart.”
“This. You,” she said, sighing as the pleasure bloomed into something wild again. “I just needed to feel safe tonight. I needed to feel connected to something solid and warm and unbreakable. Just for a little while.”
“Then hold on to me.”
It’s a great dynamic between them, where Leni is all in, and Knox wants to be all in but is battling the pain of his past and the fear of what a future with him would mean for Leni, and I loved watching them figure it all out. They’re honest and functional about it, which I loved, and the vulnerability in such a fierce and strong warrior was gorgeous to see.
“I don’t know how to be what you need, Leni, what you deserve. You make me want to be something I’ve never been before.
But despite his softer side, Knox is still a total badass, and he proves that by going all out to protect Leni and Travis. There is some great action and excitement, and a bit of intrigue as secrets are revealed and the bad guys are hunted down. There are cameos from a couple of Order faves (squee!), but this is very much Knox and Leni’s story as they battle their enemies and find their way forward together.
“You belong to me, Lenora … I’m not letting you go.”
This is a great read. It’s a quick one, but it’s a fantastic instalment in a series, and a world, that I can’t get enough of, and I loved this one.
4 stars.
