The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Verity and Regretting You delivers another breathtaking romance with a magnetic suspense that will keep you glued to the pages.

Life and a dismal last name are the only two things Beyah’s parents ever gave her. After carving her path all on her own, Beyah is well on her way to bigger and better things, thanks to no one but herself.

With only two short months separating her from the future she’s built and the past she desperately wants to leave behind, an unexpected death leaves Beyah with no place to go during the interim. Forced to reach out to her last resort, Beyah has to spend the remainder of her summer on a peninsula in Texas with a father she barely knows. Beyah’s plan is to keep her head down and let the summer slip by seamlessly, but her new neighbor Samson throws a wrench in that plan.

Samson and Beyah have nothing in common on the surface. She comes from a life of poverty and neglect; he comes from a family of wealth and privilege. But one thing they do have in common is that they’re both drawn to sad things. Which means they’re drawn to each other. With an almost immediate connection too intense for them to continue denying, Beyah and Samson agree to stay in the shallow end of a summer fling. What Beyah doesn’t realize is that a rip current is coming, and it’s about to drag her heart out to sea.

Review

5 stars!

Oh, I love this book! A witty, smart, heartbreaking, but absolutely beautiful read that sucked me in and owned my heart from start to finish. It’s the real kind of NA romance that I love from Colleen Hoover, and this is such a special read!

Beyah’s life has been a devastating nightmare. Born into poverty, she’s pretty much raised herself with a drug-addicted, neglectful mother and an absent father. She’s lived through hell, but she has endured and is now a strong, confident, though damaged, 19 year old. When she finally gets out of her dead-end home town, she finds herself on a Texas beach with the whole summer ahead of her.

Home still feels like a mythical place I’ve been searching for my whole life.

Her first interaction with Samson isn’t what you’d call a romantic meet-cute, but it turns out that he is her neighbour for the summer, living a life in luxury that is the complete opposite to hers. But Beyah recognises something in him – he’s damaged, just like she is.

And when these two damaged souls come together… magic happens.

“You can fill your life with nice things, but nice things don’t fill the holes in your soul.”
“What fills the holes int eh soul?”
Samson’s eyes scroll over my face for a few seconds. “Pieces of someone else’s soul.”

This is such a beautiful story. Beyah and Samson share a strong attraction, but neither of them are in a position to be starting anything. Firstly, they’ve both got issues and don’t particularly want to get close to anybody, secondly, they both have plans to leave town at the end of summer. But their connection cannot be denied, and they soon find themselves falling into a sweet, sexy, all-consuming romance where they can truly be themselves with each other.

“Hearts don’t have bones. They can’t actually break.”

But Samson has secrets, and as their summer draws to a close, everything is going to change for both of them.

Maybe we did grow heart bones. But what if the only way of knowing you grew a heart bone is by feeling the agony caused by the break?

It’s a really quick read, but it packs an emotional punch. Beyah’s story broke my heart, and the ongoing impact of all that she has been through made me ache for her. Her strength is staggering, and I loved watching her slowly opening up to Samson and experiencing friendship, comfort and love for the first time in her life. Balancing out all of that heavy, there are so many cute and fun moments, with great flirting and banter. And, of course, the romance is just gorgeous. Sweet and sexy and everything that I have come to expect from a Coho love story, I fell hard for these two and loved watching them find their way forward together.

Love is a lot like water.
It can be calm. Raging. Threatening. Soothing.
Water will be many things, but even in all its forms, it will always be water.
You are my water.
I think I might be yours, too.

The story brings some twists, and it felt like my heart stopped a couple of times there, but the ending is perfect, and I finished this book clutching my kindle to my chest with a huge smile on my face.

There’s something about Colleen Hoover’s writing that is just magical. She has created wonderful characters, and written beautifully to bring us a story that has humour, heart and so much emotion. I was completely captivated by Beyah and Samson’s story and I loved every moment of it.

Samson’s knee brushes high up on my inner thigh and I’m glad he can’t see anything from my chin down, because my body is covered in chills right now.

“I didn’t think there were many people in the world like me,” he says.

“You think we’re alike?” I want to laugh at that comparison, but there’s not an ounce of humor in his expression.

“I believe we have a lot more in common than you think we do, Beyah.”

“You think you’re as alone in this world as I am?”

He folds his lips together and nods his head, and it’s the most honest thing I’ve ever seen. I never would have thought someone so well off could have a life as shitty as mine, but I can see it in the way he’s looking at me. Everything about him suddenly seems familiar to me.

He’s right. We are alike, but only in the saddest ways.

My voice comes out in a whisper when I say, “When I first met you on that ferry, I could tell you were damaged.”

There’s a flicker of something in his eyes as he tilts his head to the right. “You think I’m damaged?”

“Yes.”

He moves even closer in the water, but there wasn’t much space left between us to begin with. It’s deliberate, and so much of me is touching so much of him now. “You’re right,” he says quietly, slipping a hand around the back of my left knee. “There’s nothing left of me but a fucking pile of debris.” He pulls me to him, wrapping both my legs around him. That’s all he does, though. He doesn’t try to kiss me. He just connects us together as if that’s enough while our arms keep us both afloat.

I’m swiftly succumbing to him. I don’t know in what way. All of them, maybe. Because right now, I need him to do something else. Anything else. Taste me. Touch me. Drag me under.

We watch each other for a moment and it’s almost like looking into a broken mirror. He leans in slowly, but not toward my mouth. He presses his lips against my shoulder, so gentle it feels like a graze.

I close my eyes and inhale.

I’ve never felt anything so sensual. So perfect.
