Connor isn’t in the market for messy.
His life is going completely according to plan. He’s set to become CEO of his family’s company, his Ironman time is better than ever, and his regular poker nights with the guys are his one night a month he can stop worrying about counting macros and indulge himself. What he doesn’t need is a relationship with Emerson Dyer – daughter of his father’s lifelong enemy and most-hated rival.
Emerson’s life is nothing but messy.
Since her father died, leaving her CEO of their gin distillery, everything that could go wrong has gone wrong. Emerson is barely holding it together – what she doesn’t need is a complication like Connor Finch. Sure, his abs do look like they’ve been photoshopped, but she has no time to spend counting them. It’s her company’s numbers she should be worrying about. Still, there’s something about the way he makes her feel.
Together, they’re perfect.
Connor knows he and Emerson don’t make sense on paper. Too many differences between them – and one big secret that could destroy Emerson’s family business tells him to cut and run. But for once in his life, Connor doesn’t care about messy or imperfect—because the fact is, Emerson is the one perfect thing he needs in his life. Now if he can only convince her . . .

It’s been a while since we’ve gotten a new book from Scarlett Cole, and now she’s back, with a lighter book than we are used to from her, a sweet, sexy, sort-of-enemies-to-lovers romance that is low angst and super functional. I loved these characters, and really enjoyed this one.
Emerson Dyer has just inherited her family’s gin distillery. She was already working there alongside her brother and sister, but following the death of their father, Emerson is now in charge and she’s determined to succeed and do her family legacy proud. But the business is low on money and full of problems she doesn’t know how to solve, and she’s barely keeping her head above water. The last thing she has time for is a new man in her life, but then she meets Connor Finch.
Connor is gorgeous, confident, structured and motivated, and his life is going exactly where he wants it to, with him on track to become the CEO of his family’s alcohol distribution company when his father retires. He knows of Emerson’s family due to his father’s longstanding feud with Emerson’s father, but he’s never actually met any of them until a snarky encounter with Emerson when they are both flying to the same industry event.
Meeting Emerson in person knocks Connor on his ass. Despite their less-than-ideal first meeting, when they meet again the sparks and flirty banter fly thick and fast. Their attraction is intense, and despite their busy lives they dive into a relationship without reservation, acknowledging their attraction and openly and honestly going after what they want, bringing us a sweet and gleefully angst-free romance. They refuse to play games, their sexual chemistry is sizzling, and I loved watching them easily and naturally fall for each other.
As the romance is developing, we get up close and person with both Emerson and Connor’s professional lives. Emerson’s family distillery is a big part of the story as she wades through the mess left behind by her father and works hard to move the business forward. Her brother and sister are a big part of that, and I’m assuming the series will continue with books for them, and I am really excited to get to know them better! At the same time, Connor is dealing with family drama which, of course, impacts his own career. The hatred that his father has towards Emerson’s family is a big issue, so are his plans for the future of the company. After lots of build-up, it all comes to a head in a confrontation that is both predictable and heartbreaking, but it’s handled well by all involved and works to bring about a really satisfying resolution, ending the story in a great place.
I really enjoyed this book. It’s a well written, easy read, and the business stuff was interesting and incorporated well into the love story. The romance didn’t pack the emotional punch that I have experienced with previous Cole books, but it’s sweet and sexy, and I really appreciated the openness and lack of drama between Emerson and Connor, and the eagerness with which they embraced everything that was happening between them.
I’m excited for more from this series.

Excerpt
Connor leaned his elbow on the cab window, hand in his hair as he studied her, his gaze intense. It was a wonder there weren’t physical sparks flickering between the
two of them, igniting the seat.
Neither of them said a word.
Emerson answered the question of how far she’d let him go almost as soon as she’d thought it.
As far as he wanted to.
The tip of his finger brushed against her red lace underwear, making her gasp and her stomach muscles clench. She wanted more immediately, but his hand never
ventured quite far enough to allow him to apply any pressure.
The side of Connor’s mouth tilted in a smirk. He knew exactly what he was doing to her…or in this case what he wasn’t doing to her.
She squinted in a mock frown.
Soon, he mouthed.
Meet the Author
Scarlett Cole is a contemporary romance author that calls both Toronto, Canada and Manchester, England home. A born city dweller, she periodically quashes the urge to live in the country by hiking up a mountain to remind herself that living away from people would terrify the pants off her.
She believes everybody deserves their love story to be told and loves her heroes on the rough and rugged side…and usually tall (because she married one of those 6ft 6” men you read about in romance!). She’s an A-type personality and Scorpio star sign, so good luck getting her to do anything she doesn’t want to. When she isn’t writing, she’s happy to talk hot men and expensive shoes while drinking a cold gin and tonic. Don’t bring up olives. As far as Scarlett is concerned, they are the devil’s food. As long as you don’t bring up olives, she’s happy to hear from any time.
