Review

“If you wanted, I would burn down the world for you.”

5 stars!

I love this book! It’s the first in the Twisted series by new-to-me-author, Ana Huang, and it’s a sometimes fun yet deeply emotional romance with passion, angst and intensity. A brother’s-best-friend / opposites attract love story that had me glued to my kindle as the story twisted and turned, with elements of suspense and family drama, and one hell of a romance, I couldn’t put this book down.

Ava is a delightful, free-spirited heroine. She is an optimist and is all about living her best life and having fun while doing it. She has a dark past, having endured horrible trauma, and she has almost no memory of her childhood because of it. And though she has demons, she has kept moving forward, determined to see the best in the world. I loved her.

Alex is the best friend of Ava’s older brother, Josh. Still in his 20s, he is a self-made billionaire, ruthless and cold, with an armor of steel protecting him from everybody and everything. He is a man who survived an unimaginable tragedy which shaped his entire life, and he is unwaveringly focussed on vengeance for the pain of his past.

When Josh travels overseas for work for a year, he is concerned for Ava’s safety, so he asks Alex to keep an eye on her. Jumping right on board, Alex promptly moves himself into Josh’s house – right next door to Ava – inserting himself right into her life. Ava is, of course, annoyed, but she relishes the chance to spend time with the gorgeous man that has always intrigued her, but who has always been so standoff-ish. And so begins a fantastically entertaining series of run-ins with Alex being an overprotective alpha, and Ava working hard to bring her sunshine and brightness into Alex’s cold and controlled life. There is great banter, and fantastically building chemistry, and as we begin to see cracks in Alex’s callousness, there is this wonderful feeling of anticipation, knowing something amazing is coming.

I hated how much I wanted her, and I hated that she wasn’t smart enough to run away from me while she still had a chance.
Thought let’s be honest, it was already too late.
She was mine. She just didn’t know it yet.

That ‘something’ is an epic, passionate romance, and OMG, it’s awesome! It’s clear they have an attraction, but Alex is reluctant to expose Ava to his life, and to his kinky tendencies. But he soon discovers that Ava is right on board with all of that, leading them to an intimate, passionate and somewhat filthy hookup that is immediately so much more. They are so freaking hot together, but more than that, they share a connection that is tender, sweet and playful, no-nonsense and increasing in emotion each and every day, and I love their dynamic so much.

“You are the light to my dark, Sunshine,” he said in a raw voice. His lips brushed against mine as he spoke. “Without you, I’m lost.”

But they both have pain in their pasts that has impacted them significantly. And there are dark secrets lurking that, when revealed, have the capacity to destroy everything.

She felt like heaven to my hell, the closest I’d ever get to salvation, and yet I still wanted to drag her into the depths of Hades with me.

The drama and emotion is beautifully written, and there’s an intriguing and heart-pounding suspense storyline that had me madly guessing how it was all going to play out. It’s really cleverly plotted out, with lots of shocks and surprises, and I loved watching the characters deal with it all. Their situations are on the extreme end of the drama scale, but it felt real, I could empathise with all that Ava and Alex were feeling and, right or wrong, I understood their reactions to it all. I love the way the story kept me on my toes, not knowing what was coming, and the unpredictability of it all had my heart pounding.

“I’m trying to save you, Ava,” he said…
“From what?” I refused to look at him, but I could see him watching me out of the corner of my eye.
“From me.”
I didn’t respond, because how was I supposed to tell the man determined to save me that I didn’t want to be saved?

And through the ups and downs, I was feeling it all! So. Many. Feels! My heart ached with these characters, for all they went through in the past, and for all they go through during this book. Theirs is a difficult journey, and the angst is so well written – it makes sense to the story and adds so much depth without becoming stupid or frustrating. They are such strong characters, and I thought the balance of protectiveness, self-preservation and fighting for what they want was really well done.

I wanted every shadow of his soul and every piece of his beautiful, multilayered heart. I wanted to pour into him every drop of light I had to give until he consumed me whole. Until I was his, and he was mine.

Taking their backs through it all is a fantastic group of friends. Ava’s brother, Josh, is funny, protective, and just gorgeous, and her three best friends are constantly supporting her. Each unique and entertaining, I’m assuming they will form the basis of the books to come in this series, and with a couple of stories already nicely set up, I am beyond excited to read more about them.

I loved this book. It’s a great mix of light and fun, and dark romance and suspense with a beautifully developed, sexy and intense love story. I love Ava and Alex as characters, and I loved Ana Huang’s writing style. She brought so much heart to this story, and I adored every moment of it.

This book can easily standalone, but it’s also a really strong beginning to a series I can’t wait to dive into. Such a great read.

Excerpt

Something smelled delicious, like spice and heat. I wanted to wrap it around me like a blanket.

I snuggled closer to the source, enjoying the strong, solid warmth beneath my cheek. I didn’t want to wake up, but I’d promised Bridget I would volunteer at a local pet shelter with her this morning, before my afternoon shift at the gallery.

I allowed myself one more minute of coziness—had my bed always been this big and soft—before I opened my eyes and yawned.

Weird. My room looked different. No photograph prints papering the walls, no vase of sunflowers by the bed. And did my bed just move by itself?

My eyes latched onto the broad expanse of bare skin beneath me, and my stomach dropped. I looked up, up—straight into a pair of familiar green eyes. Eyes that stared back at me with no hint of the humor from last night.

He flicked his gaze down. I followed it…and realized, to my abject horror, that I was touching Alex Volkov’s dick. Unintentionally, and he had on sweats, but still.

I. Was. Touching. Alex. Volkov’s. Dick.

And it was hard.
