This is the fifth book in the Dark in You series, and the first that moves away from Harper and Knox, as Devon and Tanner become the focus in this first spin-off that is just as sexy, intense and action-packed as I expected.
Devon is a long-time friend of Harper, and Tanner is one of Knox’s sentinels. She is a hellcat, he is a hellhound, their demons are enemies, and that reflects in the constant animosity that simmers between them. They have bickered and flirted their way through each of the previous books, and the sexual tension has always been intense. It was clear that their coming together would be explosive, and I was excited to watch how it was all going to happen.
Turns out it’s Tanner’s protectiveness over Devon that sparks it all. When she is kidnapped, he steps in not only as her protector, but to join the investigation into who took her and why. He ends up moving her into his building, and all of that close proximity leads to a sizzling encounter.
They shouldn’t be together. Not only will their demons never allow it, but Devon is looking for a mate, and a long-term commitment is the last thing on Tanner’s mind. But they can’t stay away from each other, or keep their hands off each other, and every time they are together, the bond between them only strengthens.
This is a really intense romance. The connection between Devon and Tanner is strong, and the sexy time is seriously freaking hot. Like all Wright books, the sex is frequent, descriptive, and sizzling, with lots of dirty talk, and it’s a reflection of the primal nature of these supernatural beings. But it also shows the growing intensity between the characters, and I liked seeing them connect emotionally as they begin to accept their feelings, and just how much they mean to each other – and always have.
While Devon and Tanner are exploring things between them, Devon’s kidnapper is still on the loose, and seems to be becoming more and more desperate to get to her. Meanwhile, Tanner, Knox and the boys are investigating a serial killer who seems to be targeting people from their past. It’s all happening, and there’s lots of fighting, mystery and supernatural badassery on display.
This was a really enjoyable read. It’s got great action and intensity, not one but two mystery/suspense storylines, and a fun, super sexy romance with just the right amount of emotion. There’s a whole lot of character interaction, the dynamics are lots of fun, and I really like how well-developed the supernatural world is – every character’s demon forms a huge part of their personality, influencing their lives and the way they interact with others, and it’s really well done. There’s lots of banter, joking and teasing, and some really funny moments, and I enjoyed catching up with the characters that have appeared in the previous books. There is continued setups for more books in the series, and I’m looking forward to exploring more in this world.
A fun and sexy paranormal read – 3 stars.
