This is a gorgeous read! A sweetly romantic, slow burn love story with wonderful characters and a really nice emotional twist. Such a great story, I loved it!
Donovan and Autumn met when their luggage got mixed up at the airport, and they meet up to exchange suitcases. Their quick meeting turned into coffee, which turned into dinner, which turned into an amazing weekend together that came to an end when Autumn ran without explanation or a way to get in touch.
It’s months later when they run into each other again – Donovan is the lawyer for a troubled young boy, and Autumn is the Social Worker on the case. It seems like it’s meant to be, except that Donovan is aiming to make partner in his law firm and took the case on as a favour to his boss…. the same man that Autumn happens to be dating.
It’s an awkward situation, made all the more uncomfortable by the fact that they are still wildly attracted to each other. They quickly find themselves platonically all up in each other’s lives, and the easiness that existed between them in the past becomes a fun and natural friendship. Though they both want more, Autumn has emotional walls up to stop anybody getting too close. But when she ditches the ‘boyfriend’, all bets are off, and Donovan is a man on a mission to break through her emotional barriers and win her heart.
“I have never been more interested in a woman in my life. Whether you wanted me or not, you’ve had me for the last year, Autumn.”
It seems like a simple set-up, but there’s a lot of depth to this story, and it’s beautiful watching it all unfold. The book is written mostly from Donovan’s POV, which I loved, and the man is pure perfection as he determinedly pursues Autumn, but taking care with her heart, wooing her slowly, and going at the pace that she needs to feel comfortable.
“You scare the hell out of me, Donovan.”
“Right back at ya, Red. But you know what? I’m more afraid of what I’ll be missing if we don’t give this a real shot.”
Autumn has been through a really hard time and she justifiably has difficulties opening up and trusting, and I could empathise with her and all that she’s been through. She handles her situation well though, and I loved her bravery in the way she allowed herself to trust Donovan and share her past and let him in. And her situation, though heartbreaking, gives Donovan the chance to shine as a man who wears his heart on his sleeve. He’s open about pretty much everything – his heartbreaking past and its impact on him, and his feelings for Autumn and all that he wants from her. And as he lets her into his life, she finds her walls crumbling, and it was beautiful watching the two of them come together so openly and honestly. It’s a gorgeous slow burn that is absolutely worth the wait, and I could feel everything that these two were feeling as they fell and fell hard.
“Love is…enough. None of the other things are important when you find the right person. You’re in my heart, Autumn—hell, you own my heart.”
There is some drama, but it’s nothing unexpected, and it’s resolved well. I finished this book feeling completely satisfied, with a huge smile on my face.
I listened to this as an audiobook, narrated by Sebastian York and Andi Arndt, and as always, they do a great job with it. I really enjoyed listening to this one, and thoroughly recommend it!
