This is a sweet romance. The third book in the McKinney Brothers series, it is the story of JT McKinney, youngest of the McKinney clan.
JT’s dreams of a future in the NFL were cut short when he lost his leg in a horrific accident as a teenager. Since then he has pulled himself out of a deep depression, moved to California – on the other side of the country from his parents – and has started his own prosthetic research and design company. He has made a huge success of himself, but the trauma of his past has left him unwilling to find love or make a family of his own.
Paige is a young single mother working two jobs and going to school, trying hard to make something of herself and create a good life for herself and her 5 year old daughter, Casey.
JT runs into Paige at the diner where she works and he is immediately drawn to her. He keeps returning, desperate to get to know her but too afraid to make the first move, and then he meets young Casey who, like him, has a prosthetic leg. Drawn to the little girl as much as he is her mother, he offers the resources of his company to help her, and they slowly develop a friendship.
And the more time they spend together, JT and Paige’s attraction to each other continues to blossom. But she is too busy to make room in her life for anybody else, and JT has to deal with his past before he can move on and find happiness in his future. It’s not an easy road, but neither of them can deny everything that is happening between them.
The first book in this series, Worth the Fall, became an instant favourite when I read it, it completely blew my mind. I wasn’t such a few fan of the second book, but I still went into this one with high hopes, and sadly, I just didn’t feel it. The romance was sweet, but I found the story to be really slow moving, even boring, and I had trouble staying interested. Honestly, I struggled to finish it :\
For me, the book was rescued by Casey. She is such a sweetheart, struggling to fit in but otherwise blissfully happy and absolutely adorable, and I enjoyed watching the development of her and JT’s relationship. Seeing JT’s somewhat closed-off exterior melt in her presence was beautiful to watch.
I also liked that we got to check in with the characters of the previous books and, even though it was slow, I thought the way the story played out was really nicely done, and it’s all wrapped up with a swoony HEA.
I didn’t love it, but I liked it – 3 stars.
