At First Hate, the second book in the Coastal Chronicles by K.A. Linde, features Marely and Derek, and it is a roller-coaster ride spanning more than fifteen years. Full of feels, angst, and growth, this enemies-to-lovers, second-chance romance will break your heart before finally piecing it back together. It’s emotional and angsty, and I loved it.

Marley and Derek meet in high school and immediately start off on the wrong foot. They are opposite in so many ways but there is an attraction that is undeniable. After sharing a kiss that shifts her world, Derek ends up ruining everything. Years pass and they bump into each other over and over again. Each time they are at odds with each other but the spark burns brighter with every interaction. They come together only to be ripped apart and Marley can only take so much heartache.

Now, she’s back in town for her Gran’s funeral when she runs into Derek again. What makes the situation even worse is that he is the attorney representing the party who is trying to take what is rightfully Marley’s. She tries to stay away even though her heart can’t seem let him go. It’s easy to fall back into each other but can they truly be together or will they be torn apart once again?

This story is full of ups and downs and my heart really went out to Marley. She is such a great character and has a huge heart. She is smart, funny, and so personable that I couldn’t help but love her. It took longer to warm up to Derek. He is a smooth talking, charming guy who with one look can make you melt. However, it takes him a while to realize what he wants and to figure out how he can be deserving of Marley. 

There is no denying that Marley and Derek have smoking hot chemistry. From the banter to the steam, these two are awesome together. I felt the buildup each time they were together and it was all believable!

I’d denied myself this for so long. Ignored every single part of me that said I didn’t want him. I didn’t want this. And now, we were here, and I could feel every single lie break down and dissolve into nothing.
I wanted Derek Ballentine. I wanted him more than anyone else in my entire existence.

They are hot and heavy and then ice cold when hearts break and I was along for the ride. I was so mad at Derek and I hurt for Marely but I think that each time the growth that both experienced is what finally leads them back to each other.

I hated him for our past, but somehow, I still felt exactly the same for him as I always had.

The ending is slighted rushed but because of their history, it was still believable and I love how everything turned out. I enjoyed the secondary characters and am excited to get more of Lila. Poor Ash though. That was rough.

Overall, At First Hate is a well-developed enemies-to-lovers, second chance romance that will make you laugh, cry, swoon and fall in love. It’s a fantastic addition to the series and I can’t wait for more!! I need Josie and Maddox’s story!!
