4.5 stars!
Overruled is the first book in the Legal Briefs series written by Emma Chase. It is a funny, sexy read with some swoony moments thrown into the mix. This story is told from the POVs of both the hero and heroine, and Emma Chase wrote both wonderfully. I loved just about everything about the heroine. As for the hero, there were moments where I wanted to knock him upside the head for some of the things he was thinking, but overall I really enjoyed getting his view too.
The story begins with Stanton and Jenny. Two high-schoolers in love.
She’s more than just my first kiss—my first everything. Jenny’s my best friend. And I’m hers.
Stanton has loved Jenny since he was twelve. His post high school graduation plans were set and he never thought things would change. He had always wanted to become a lawyer and he was on his way to Columbia in the fall to start making that dream a reality…until two blue lines threw a wrench in his plans. He had always thought Jenny could visit him and they would make the relationship work. A baby would make it difficult to visit so they decide that Stanton would go off to become the lawyer he’s always wanted to be while supporting her and the baby. Then when he was done with law school, he would come get them. They settled on an open relationship (her idea) while they were apart, but whenever Stanton was in town, they would be together again.
Young love is strong. First love is powerful. But what you don’t know when you’re young—what you can’t know—is how long life actually is. And the only dependable thing about it, besides death and taxes, is change.
The story jumps ten years to present time. Stanton is a hot shot defense attorney living in D.C. He loves his job and is damn good at it. He also loves his daughter, Presley and is a great dad. He talks to her and Jenny everyday, and visits them in Mississippi whenever he can. Everyone knows about Jenny and Presley, including Sofia, Stanton’s coworker and friend-with-benefits. Stanton won’t get emotionally involved with anyone else because his heart still belongs to Jenny, and that is just fine with Sofia.
Sofia is a beautiful, hardworking, career driven woman and she doesn’t want complications.
I don’t need that kind of distraction. Don’t want that type of complication. My career is right where it’s supposed to be—the fast track—and come hell or high water, or orgasms that make me forget my social security number, that’s where it’s going to stay.
Things between Stanton and Sofia couldn’t be better. Not only do they make a great team in the courtroom, but they are HOT in the bedroom too. And they sure do like their sexy time!
“What if I told you I had to have you again? Feel you clamping down around me so hard I see heaven. That I can’t stand the thought of not fucking those hot, breathy sounds out of you, until you scream my name? Would you let us do that one more time, even if it’s the last?”
Stanton is happy with how things are in D.C. and in Mississippi. That is until he receives a fancy invitation in the mail. An invitation to Jenny’s wedding. Saying he freaks out is an understatement and he is determined to go down to Mississippi to stop the wedding. Stanton decides he needs Sofia to come with him for support and this is a set up for some major awkwardness.
So Stanton and Sofia make their way down to Mississippi and Sofia begins to question her place in Stanton’s plan. Sofia struggles with her own emotions and she starts to realize she’s done the last thing she wanted.
“I love you,” I whisper.
It’s horrifying. A mess. And the most true, pure thing I’ve ever felt in my life.
“I love you, you big, stupid idiot!”
Stanton really was acting like an idiot, thinking he wants things he actually doesn’t, and hurting the girl right in front of him.
“You’re so stubborn—you’re so stuck on what you think is supposed to be, that you’re missin’ what’s right in front of you.”
Stanton ends up making a mess of things but is it too late to have what his heart wants?
Most stories finish at the end. But not this one. This one finishes with a whole new beginning.
Overruled was such an enjoyable read and an awesome start to a new series! I can’t wait to get my hands on the other books.
