As a huge fan of the Night Huntress series, I’ve been so curious about this series, and was excited to dive in. It’s an action-packed ride with great world building and an interesting perspective on angels and demons, with just a touch of romance.
Ivy has always been a little different. She sees things that other people don’t, and has spent many years pretending to be ‘normal’, while experiencing terrifying hallucinations. But when her sister goes missing, Ivy learns that her hallucinations are actually real, and what she’s seeing is actually a demon realm that exists parallel to the human world, that’s where her sister is being held, and they are both part of an ancient biblical line.
And then along comes Adrian, a gorgeous yet mysterious badass with powers of his own who is tasked with escorting Ivy through the demon realms where she is to retrieve a mythical weapon and save her sister. Adrian is broody and secretive, and he does not want to be the one helping Ivy – especially when their chemistry sparks from the moment they meet – but he’s there to do a job, and he’s very no-nonsense in going about it.
It’s a good set-up, and Frost does a good job in establishing a well-developed world that is interesting and exciting. There’s a whole lot of lore, supernatural powers and strange creatures, but it’s based around angel and demon mythology, and I like the spin that Frost has put on it.
“When it’s light versus dark, that doesn’t matter. One shadow in a brightly lit room goes unnoticed, but shine a ray of light into even the darkest corner…and everything changes.”
I’m a romance fan, so of course I was here for the love story, and this one gives us just a taste. There is great chemistry between Adrian and Ivy, but his destiny is to betray her so he does his best to keep his distance, and we get this fantastic push and pull where we get a hint of hotness, and we can see the epic potential, but we’re not quite there just yet.
“You’re the light I can never have…and I’m the darkness you’ll never succumb to.”
The journey they undertake together is only the beginning of their adventure, and their story continues throughout the series. Based on previous books I have read by this author, I found this book to be a little underwhelming, but it’s a promising start, and I’ll definitely continue on with the series to see what happens.
