He Will be My Ruin is a suspenseful thriller full of mystery that kept me on my toes the entire time and left me enthralled with the story. It is not a romance novel like I usually read, yet it was so enjoyable that I did not mind one bit that it lacked this element.
The story begins when Maggie is back in NYC to clean up and sort through her best friend’s affairs after an apparent suicide. Maggie and Celine grew up together and were close like sisters. They knew each other inside and out and Maggie, who can’t fathom her friend doing such a thing, remains confident that foul play was involved.
A missing cell phone.
Flowers from a guy she never told me about.
A stack of money.
A picture of a naked man hidden away in her lockbox, with dramatic proclamations scrawled across the back.
A girl who I just can’t believe would kill herself.
What if the police have it wrong?
When I drift off, my dreams are full of murder.
Maggie starts looking at Celine’s possessions, her job, and the mystery man, all of which lead to more questions. As she continues to look for clues, she finds that things are not always as they seem. She realizes that Celine’s life was completely different than she ever imagined, and she has a hard time accepting what Celine kept hidden from her, something that is outright shocking and so unlike the Celine she knew. The more secrets are revealed, the more complicated everything becomes, and when Maggie finally discovers what happened, will it be too late?
How I trusted him, how I fell for his charm, how I believed his lies. How I made it so easy for him to do this to me.
How Celine made it so easy for him, by letting him get close.
Before he killed her.
Just like he’s going to kill me.
K.A. Tucker has woven a story with so many twists and turns that you are left guessing until the very end. You will come up with theories and right when you think you have it all figured out, something is thrown into the mix that disproves everything you thought you knew. The complexity that K.A. Tucker delivers in this book is brilliant and the writing was fantastic. The plot was well developed, as were the characters.
I loved Maggie and I thought that she was a very likable and believable character. I loved how loyal she was to Celine, and even though she was wading through the heartache of losing her best friend, grasping onto anything to prove that Celine didn’t commit suicide, she was determined to discover the truth and would not back down. The side characters were also interesting and I love the support they gave Maggie. Though the story is written from Maggie’s POV, we do get to see snippets of Celine’s life through diary entries and a few scenes from her POV which are a great addition to the story.
Though some of my theories were correct, there are so many elements to this story that you can’t possibly figure everything out. I highly recommend He Will Be My Ruin and hope to see K.A. Tucker write more books like this! It is much different than her other works, but no less enjoyable!
