Review

3 stars!

When I read the blurb for My Professor, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. It has so many tropes I love – teacher/student, work romance, slow burn – and I started it the moment it was in my possession.

Emelia meets Professor Jonathan Barclay when she is a student at Dartmouth. He is known as the hot professor on campus but she doesn’t take his class for his looks, she needs it for her architectural conservation major.

From the beginning there is a tension between Jonathan and Emelia, and we don’t know what it is until we get his POV (yay for multiple pov books). I love that we finally get the reason behind his original treatment of her but I thought it was a little too much coming from a man who is successful and professional. He just couldn’t be professional when it came to Emelia.

Emelia is craving something different from life. She is smart, studious, and loves her major, and has a clear idea what she wants to do in life. However, she when it comes to her personal life, she doesn’t let people in and frankly, she is a bit of a mess. She doesn’t want to the good girl she shows the world. She wants something more and for one moment she gets it from Jonathan.

Four years later, she is out of college and starts working at Jonathan’s firm. She has earned her right to be there and she is good at what she does but we are back to the dynamics between Emelia and Jonathan that we left off in college.

I’m at the mercy of Professor Barclay’s whims, and while that excites me, it also terrifies me.

It is a slow burn romance that really cranks up the sexual tension. The book brings on the heat and there is no question that Emelia and Jonathan are smokin’ hot together. The banter is entertaining and I liked seeing Emelia step out of her comfort zone and get what she really wanted.

And though I enjoyed the book, I didn’t devour it like I usually do with this author’s books. The beginning was slow to me and I didn’t really connect with the characters. It took me a while to believe these two were meant to be together because there weren’t a lot of scenes where they were really getting to know each other. I would have loved to see more development relationship-wise that didn’t have to do with their attraction and the way she wanted to be controlled by him in the bedroom. I didn’t feel the depth of their relationship that I expected, and though the pace definitely sped up the last third of the book and I wanted to know what happens, the ending felt rushed.

Overall, this book was entertaining but it didn’t give me all the things I love from the author.
