5 stars! I loved it!

I love this series so hard! Rebecca Zanetti has created a great paranormal world with fantastic characters, and I loved the opportunity to dive back into this series. This time it’s a novella, and I wish it had been longer because I absolutely loved this one! Chalton has been a presence in the series since the very beginning and I loved finally getting his story. Full of all of the action, adventure, humour, wonderful character dynamics, brilliant banter and sexy, sexy romance that I love, this little story has it all!

Chalton is the tech genius of the realm. He used to be an assassin, but hung up his gun a long time ago and has since become the brains behind everything tech-related in the Realm, and that’s where he is content so stay. But when King Dage sends him out to track down a journalist who knows more than she should about their world, he’s not exactly in a position to say no.

He barely tolerated crazy, and he hated crowds. What he wouldn’t give to be in his secluded computer control room deep in the Idaho mountains. But no. When the king of the Realm ordered a vampire on a mission, a vamp went on a mission. Even if that guy hadn’t been on a mission in a century.

Olivia is a feisty, stubborn and determined young journalist. Desperate to uncover the truth about her latest story – the possible existence of an advanced race on earth – she is heading out to meet her source when she is kidnapped right off the street, and then rescued by a tall, ripped, God-like creature who she doesn’t trust, but who seems determined to protect her.

From the very beginning there is epic chemistry between Chalton and Olivia. There is an obvious physical attraction, and when Chalton whisks Olivia away to safety (much to her horror), he finds himself drawn to her spirited, no-nonsense manner. And the fact that he recognises her as an ‘enhanced’ female – able to be a vampire mate – just makes things all the more interesting, and the teasing and banter is so much fun as Chalton makes his intentions known.

“God, you’re beautiful,” he murmured.
Somehow that made her even madder. “You are such a dick. Guys like you don’t find girls like me beautiful.” Spitting fire, she glared up at him.
He leaned into her, loving the way her eyes widened in awareness…
“Your beauty isn’t exactly a matter of opinion, darlin’. You’re stunning.”
“Stop playing with me,” she almost growled.
“I haven’t started playing with you, and when I do, you’ll fucking know it,” he shot back.

How could this be happening? No way, no way, was she attracted to a kidnapper. “Stockholm syndrome,” she murmured.
He smiled, those gorgeous lips moving. “Keep telling yourself that.”

It’s clear they want each other, and the sexual tension is sensational! But with the appearance of Chalton’s long-lost brothers, gunfights, explosions, and the race on to discover who the bad guys are and stay one step ahead of them, everything is intensified and there is no time for games – which is just as well because Chalton isn’t a game player anyway.

“I don’t love him (Chalton),” Olivia snapped.
“Yes, you do,” Chalton bit out. It was one thing to play hard to get or to take time to figure out feelings, but no way was she going to lie out loud to him. “It happens fast with vampires, so deal with it.”

And then there’s the fact that Chalton is a vampire – something Olivia had no knowedge about before she met him. It doesn’t seem to bother her too much, but does make for some great conversation.

“Livy.” His voice deepened to nearly guttural. Desire unfurled in her abdomen. Then reality slammed her in the face.
“Are you glamoring me?” she asked, anger rippling along her skin.
His eyebrows drew down. “Glamoring?”
“Yeah. What vampires do.” She put her hands on her hips. “Making me want you.”
He chuckled again. “Oh, you want me, and it’s all you. There’s no such thing as glamoring.”
Truth. She opened her senses, and he was definitely telling the truth. “Oh.”

It’s may be fast-moving, but it’s a fantastic (and sizzling hot) romance and I loved every moment of it!

Like I said, I would have LOVED for this to be a full-length book because there’s so much to these characters, and so much that happens between them, let alone all of the action-packed external storyline! It actually felt a bit rushed at times, but because of that it kept me madly flipping pages with my heart pounding the whole time. I was glued to my kindle from start to finish, and I loved it!

There’s a brief cameo by Dage and Emma and a great intro to the next novella, Tricked: A Dark Protectors Novella, with Jared and Ronni’s story already taking shape nicely.

I can’t wait for more.

5 stars.
