3.5 stars!

The third book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood: Prison Camp series, this is an exciting and intriguing paranormal read with a beautifully sweet romance.

While technically this could stand alone, I would definitely recommend reading this book in series order. Not only are the main events a direct continuation from previous books, but the characters, and the world are complex and have been well-established over many, many books. This is definitely one to enjoy as part of a long-running series.

Kane was sentenced to the Glymera’s brutal prison camp after he was framed for the death of his beloved mate. He’s endured centuries of torturous captivity, and was left brutally injured and disfigured earlier in the series, when he made the ultimate sacrifice to help a friend escape. Now, he lies in constant pain, eagerly waiting for death. But his friends have other plans. Kane is rescued from the prison in another daring escape, and when he’s taken to a secretive wolven camp, he is offered a chance at life, with the warning that he will be “altered”. Driven by thoughts of the nurse who helped him so selflessly, but who got left behind in the chaos, he chooses life, for the chance to rescue her.

Nadya volunteers as a nurse at the prison camp, and she is devoted to her job. Left horribly disfigured by a violent attack in the past, she covers her face and body and keeps to herself, and quietly goes about her life. But she can’t stop thinking about the prisoner that she cared for, and when he returns for her – alive and whole once again – she is whisked away to safety, and straight into the arms of the man she hasn’t been able to forget.

I loved Kane and Nadya together. They both have that old-school gentleness and properness about them, which makes everything between them so sweet and emotional. They talk honestly, they get to know each other, and the connection forged between them in the prison quickly deepens into more as they begin falling for each other for real.

But there are bad guys on the hunt for them, and Kane is still learning and coming to terms with what he has become. And then there’s the unfinished business of hunting down those responsible for the death of his shellan, and his wrongful imprisonment.

At the same time, the other escapees are facing their own challenges, and Vicious continues to lead the Brotherhood in the search for the prison camp. There is action and excitement, secrets, betrayal and devastation, lots of supernatural badassery, and big changes for the characters of this spin-off series. And at the heart of it is Kane and Nadya, falling for each other in a beautiful, passionate love story.

I really enjoyed this book, and I’m looking forward to more from the series.
