Woohoo! After falling in love with the first book in this series – Feral Sins – I was eagerly awaiting the release of this one, and I was not disappointed! The story of Dante and Jaime totally touched my heart.
Jaime has adored Dante since their childhood, but he never even glanced her way. Now all grown up, Dante is the Beta of the Phoenix Pack – second in charge and responsible for the day to day operation of the pack, and the pack’s wellbeing. He is responsible, ordered and totally in control, and he also has a streak of badass, which I love! He is dedicated to his role as Beta, unwilling to allow anything to interfere with that, and he is wary of relationships following a heartbreaking betrayal in the past. So when Jaime joins the pack and he has an instant attraction to her, he is dismissive and does his best to ignore her.
Jaime is a fantastic character. Strong, confident and stubborn, though slightly chaotic, she is hiding a devastating secret which potentially puts her, and the rest of the pack in grave danger. When Dante uncovers her secret, he jumps to her rescue – immediately accepting and completely supportive of her, he insists on helping her manage the problem. Of course this happens after Jaime has decided to finally move on from Dante for good, but their new proximity to each other proves too much to resist… and then comes the hotness. And holy hell, it’s hot! With Dante in all of his controlling alpha-ness, my kindle was steaming!
“You. Are. Mine. That’s it, that’s all there is to it.”
Unable to fight their attraction any longer, but unwilling to open themselves up completely to another person, they agree to get involved without getting ‘too’ involved – and we all know how that story goes! The chemistry is zinging as their feelings for each other become too strong to ignore.
“You told me you don’t do relationships.”
“I don’t. It only ends up a mess when true mates come along” …
“Then why? Why ask for more.”
A slight pause. “Because you matter.”
I love these two together!!! As an alpha wolf, Dante is assertive, possessive and protective, but Jaime is confident and witty and she gives back to him as good as she gets.
“I’ll spank your ass so damn hard there’ll be a permanent handprint right there.”
She gave him a cheeky smile. “As long as you understand there’ll be a matching one on your face.”
Even with their differences, and the walls they had placed around themselves for protection, these two are a really functional couple, they are honest and open and I love the way they communicate and compromise in order to make their relationship work. And watching them slowly come to realise their true feelings for each other was gorgeous.
“I know I’m a little fucked up. Don’t give up on me baby. I’m not saying that things will suddenly be perfect. I’m a guy, and guys can be stupid. I admit I need the room to mess up a little. I can’t promise I won’t piss you off again, but I can promise you that I’ll never deliberately hurt you. Nothing is more important to me than you. Nothing.”
I really love the way their wolves play such a huge part of the story. Their animals are a huge part of who they are, but at the same time are separate characters with their own feelings, actions and reactions, and I love how the balance is explained and then plays out.
I loved being back with the Phoenix Pack. This is a fantastic bunch of characters – essentially a big family, they care for each other deeply, but are in each other’s faces and the teasing, banter and one liners fly thick and fast. I laughed so many times while reading! There is a fair amount of wolf politics in play within their pack, as well as dramas with other packs, with one particular storyline set up beautifully and having me wishing madly for a swift resolution and a HEA for all involved. Plus, I loved the opportunity to see further developments with Trey and Taryn from the first book.
With an intriguing paranormal world, sensational characters, humour, swoony romance and some serious hotness, I’m loving this series! This book very much concentrates on the romantic storyline, however there is a fair bit of action that takes place, and the ending had me on the edge of my seat, and close to tears in places. I loved it! I can’t wait for more.
4 stars.
