This is an entertaining little short, a prequel to the upcoming full-length novel, Pick Six. It’s available free on the author’s website, and only took me around half an hour to read, just enough to set the scene and get me excited for more!

We are introduced to Harper, who is attending a friend’s BBQ. Her friend Violet’s husband is an NFL player, and so the rest of the boys from the team show up, and the team’s biggest playboy, Alexander Xavier is among them. Harper and Alexander share an instant attraction, but Harper is determined to stay away from bad boys, and Alexander doesn’t know how to be anything but.

“I know you’ve been trying to avoid guys with red flags and that man is made of them.”
“The hottest ones always are.”

We see the chemistry between them, their banter and flirting is great, and we even get an almost-steamy glimpse of what could be, before Harper pulls back, knowing that although one night together would be epic, it’s not what she wants. Alex is unable to offer her anything more than that, so they agree on the friendzone.

“Let’s be honest. We like the idea of each other – maybe. We wouldn’t like the reality.”

I love the dynamic between these two already! Of course, the sexual tension is awesome, but it’s how easily they fall together, how open and up front they are about themselves and their situation, all of which bodes well for whatever is to come for them.

She’s the kind you commit to. The kind you fall hard for. I’m incapable of both.
Unfortunately, I still want her.

With a full-length story coming our way, this is only the beginning of their story, and I am so excited to see where their story goes from here!
