Only his memories can save her…

A great primal power has risen. The Queen of Flesh and Fire has become the Primal of Blood and Bone—the true Primal of Life and Death. And the battle Casteel, Poppy, and their allies have been fighting has only just begun. Gods are awakening across Iliseeum and the mortal realm, readying for the war to come.

But when Poppy falls into stasis, Cas faces the very real possibility that the dire, unexpected consequences of what she is becoming could take her away from him. Cas is given some advice, though—something he plans to cling to as he waits to see her beautiful eyes open once more: Talk to her.

And so, he does. He reminds Poppy how their journey began, revealing things about himself that only Kieran knows in the process. But it’s anybody’s guess what she’ll wake to or exactly how much of the realm and Cas will have changed when she does.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout revisits Poppy and Casteel’s epic love story in the next installment of the Blood and Ash series. But this time, Hawke gets to tell the tale.

5 stars!

Oh wow. JLA has turned the tables, bringing us the latest instalment in the Blood and Ash series, an alternate POV book which manages to bring more depth to this beloved story, while continuing to move it forward, and allowing us to get us up close and personal with one of the most amazing romantic fantasy heroes out there, watching him fall for his true love. It’s exciting, dramatic and romantic, and there was no doubt I was going to love this one.

The fifth book in the Blood and Ash series, this is most definitely not a standalone and, like the rest of the books in the series, must be read in order.

This book picks up in the moments after the massive ending of the last book. Poppy is trying to comprehend all that went down when she suddenly falls into stasis – a long, recuperative sleep that will leave her changed when she eventually awakens. It’s the perfect opportunity for Cass to go all uber-protective over his resting wife, and for him to remember their early days, telling their story to Poppy from his perspective, and allowing us a wonderful insight into a story that I love so much.

It had just taken me that time to realize I could be worthy of such an emotion … after all I’d done. That I could allow myself to love and be loved without hesitation or conditions.

Is there anything better than a hero who is completely smitten with his girl? Well, yes, watching that hero go from an emotionally wrecked and desperate man to having his world completely tilted, falling in love for the first time and slowly coming to the realisation that he is worthy of being loved in return. So. Many. Feels!

From the first meeting, their initial interactions and unexpected friendship, through flirtation, mad lust and falling for each other, and all of the big reveals that take place at the end of the first book, we follow Casteel’s journey, and I was captivated!

She leaned into me, her head resting against my chest and fitting rather perfectly against my body. Again, I couldn’t help but think … that in a different life, I would’ve been built for this.

I love that this book it puts a different spin on the story, and particularly enjoyed watching the twists and turns from the end of the first book. I remember reading it for the first time and being completely blown away by all of the events and how it all unfolded. Now, seeing it through Casteel’s eyes, it changes everything again, and I loved the different perspective and seeing what he was going through at the time, and why he did and said all that he did.

I wanted to be a good man who would walk away from what he knew he wasn’t worthy or deserving of. The kind Kieran believed I was. The type I had been raised to be. But I wasn’t a good man.
I was just hers.

Not only is it a chance to see the events of the past, but through intermittent chapters from the present, we also get to see Casteel reflecting back on that time, which is really fascinating. But there was never any doubting his changing feelings for Poppy, and though it’s just the beginning, the romance is so beautiful.

This moment…it felt like it had always been coming. As if every choice I’d made – that we’d made – had led to this. It was a crazy feeling, completely senseless, and yet… “This changes everything.”

Along the way, we get to see wonderful interactions with all of the side characters that we have come to know and love so much – both in the past and the present – including some of the newer additions to the story, which brings a wonderful sense of playfulness and fun, and it was great to go back and see how all of those relationships have grown over the series.

Meanwhile in the present, there some progressions for the series, and the end of the book brings some pretty epic changes for the story going forward. Like, huge! It ends on a cliffhanger that is expected, but that left me desperate for more, and I cannot wait to see where it all goes from here.

While I didn’t read this one with the breathless sense of anticipation that I usually have for books in this series, it’s still a great read, and I loved it.
