Oh, I loved this book! The first in a duet, this is an opposites-attract, fake relationship love story that is sweet and sexy with great characters, and a gorgeously developing romance.
Langley is in the hideous position of being a bridesmaid for her selfish, bitchy step-sister, who is marrying her ex-boyfriend. Yes, really. Needing a fake boyfriend by her side that will have her back and stand up to the hell of the upcoming events, she heads to a dive bar looking for a man completely outside the norm of her wealthy social circle. Iker is a tall, sexy, tattooed soldier, he looks exactly like the guy that Langley needs and, needing money to send his younger brother to school, he accepts her offer to pay him to pose as her boyfriend for the week of wedding festivities.
It’s a fun set-up, and the story moves quickly as Langley prepares Iker for his role. It’s easy between them, and they throw themselves into their fake relationship and the drama of the wedding from hell, and they very quickly come to care for each other.
They may only be together for a week, but it’s a week that changes both of their lives.
Langley is just awesome. She’s been a bit of a doormat with her step-mother and step-sister, all to not upset her beloved father, but she’s had enough, and with Iker by her side, I loved watching her come out of her shell and start to stand up for herself.
And Iker is gorgeous. He has a huge heart, he’s kind, caring, sweet and protective, and though he has put up walls to keep his circle small, he can’t help but let Langley in. I love how he stands up for her while also allowing her to stand up for herself, and despite his need to keep people at a distance, he lets himself feel everything for her.
It would be so much easier to simply remind her the only reason I was here with her tonight, was because she was paying me. But I couldn’t belittle her, or the way she made me feel, by hiding behind that lie anymore.
I was here because she was here. There was nothing more to it.
It’s sweetly romantic and hot and steamy as these two come together, and I was cheering them on the whole way. It’s natural and easy between them, and they feel so much for each other, but Langley has paid for Iker’s time, and they only agreed on a week. And as a soldier, Iker is not in a position to give Langley any more than he already has.
The book ends with a cliffhanger, and I’ll be diving right into part two of the duet so I can see where the story goes from here.
4 stars – I loved it.
I enjoyed listening to this one as an audiobook, narrated by J.F. Harding and Sofia Willingham.
