4.5 stars

This is the fifth novella in the Dark Protectors spin-off series Rebels, and it’s the second book featuring the Maxwell brothers. It’s a short, sexy and action-packed romance with a possessive alpha vampire determined to claim his mate, and I loved it.

Jasper and Leah met towards the end of WWII. He was a vampire searching for his one true mate, and he found Leah just in time to save her life by mating her and giving her immortality. She was a spy who was hell-bent on completing her mission, so they agreed to temporarily go their separate ways while they both continued on with their lives. Now it’s decades later, Leah is in danger once again, and Jasper has decided that it’s time to claim his mate once and for all.

“I told you I’d come for you one day,” he said smoothy. “Time’s up.”

I love this series so much and was so happy to be back in this world. It’s well-developed and always intriguing, and Zanetti writes it so well. There’s lots of action as Jasper and Leah team up to bring down a people smuggling ring, and it’s exciting and fast-paced with lots of supernatural badassery. And the love story is gorgeous – they know they belong together, they don’t deny their attraction, Leah is just hesitant to give up her life’s work to settle down. Jasper is a fabulous mix of fierce alpha and respectful, considerate partner, and I loved watching these two go back and forth as they figure it all out.

“This is your new reality, baby. You and me. All-in.”
Panic fought with the desire flowing through her veins. “I’m not ready.”
“Too bad. I am.”

The romance is fun, sexy, heartfelt and functional, and with these two battling each other and the bad guy, it’s an eventful read. There’s a lot going on in a really short novella, and I loved every moment.

There is enough background given for you to read this one as a standalone, but there is some character crossover and some lore that is definitely more enjoyable to read about if you’ve read the other books in the series. And if you haven’t – dive on in, because this is one of my fave PNR series.

I loved this one, and am looking forward to more books for the Maxwell brothers.

4.5 stars.
