You know what they say—when things start to come together, life throws you a curveball.

Well, in this case…a hockey puck.

Ten years ago, we were college sweethearts. Until Dominick (Ren) Renaldi decided the grass was greener playing pro hockey in Canada.

I moved on—made my mark as a designer. I run two restaurants and an inn at our family winery, Buttercup Hill.

Nothing is missing. Nothing at all.

Then Ren struts into my small town, a reminder of a broken heart I locked in the past.

Okay, yes, this responsible, type A girl could really use a wild night of scorchin’ hot fun, and Ren, with his penetrating eyes and easy charm, is all too happy to deliver—grownup style.

Imagine my surprise when I see a little pink plus sign a few weeks later.

I’m not looking for love, especially with a guy who’s walked away once. And Ren’s serious about his career, so he willwalk away. Besides, I’m not the kind of woman who traps a man with a surprise baby.

But when our shared history and a certain little growing bean brings us close again, I discover the real reason Ren left—and why he’s back.

I find myself starting to like my baby daddy and the man he became.

But what if I love him, too?

Review

“When it comes to dreaming about the one who got away, I feel certain I have a ten-year head start.”

3.5 stars

This is a sweetly romantic second-chance sports romance with a surprise baby and a whole lot of swoon. It’s the fourth book in the Buttercup Hill series, but it can be read as a standalone, and I really enjoyed this read.

Beatrix is one of the Corbett siblings who feature in this series. She is flat out managing the renovation to her family’s vineyard, and while she’s a workaholic control freak at the best of times, she’s feeling overwhelmed by all of the competing priorities on her plate. When her assistant pushes her out of the office for a break, she’s walking around her small country town when she literally runs into a blast for her past – Dominick Renaldi, hockey star, ex-college sweetheart, and love of her life. They share a scorching night together, and Trix walks away the next morning thinking that’s it. Until she discovers she’s pregnant.

Ren was thrilled to run into the women he’s never been able to get over. He handled their relationship breakup badly when he was drafted to Canada, and though he still struggles with the concept of juggling his hockey career and all of the constant travel with a relationship, now that Trix is back in his life and carrying his baby, he wants to hold on to her.

“For ten years, my heart’s ached for you, and there’s no way in hell I’m walking away again.”

I enjoyed this book and watching the love story play out. There’s no doubting that Ren and Trix are in it together, but when it comes to figuring out what their relationship actually means, that’s where things get a bit tricky. They have their differences, and balancing their busy lives with a family is definitely a challenge, but I liked seeing them embrace all that they’re feeling for each other and figure it out together.

“You’re mine, Trix. You’ve always been mine.”

The rest of the family are there supporting them both, and I enjoyed being back in this world. There’s a great lead-in to Archer’s story up next, and I’m looking forward to that one.

This is a sweet read that left me with a smile on my face.

3.5 stars.

About Stacy Travis

It’s a rough world out there, and we all sometimes need a good, romantic beach read, even if we can’t make it to the beach. I’ve spent many lazy days walking the streets of Paris and other gorgeous European cities, and if I’m doing it right, I’m bringing you a dash of romance and a vacay fantasy.

I can’t sit still, so when I’m not hiking, biking or running, I’m playing a very average game of tennis. Background music for writing undoubtedly features some U2, Lizzo, Billy Joel, Pink, Taylor Swift, and Led Zeppelin. Not necessarily in that order. And if I could only eat one food group, it would be cheese. Or wine. Or bread. Are those food groups? Whatever.
