The third book in the Sparrow Falls series, this is a gorgeous single parent sports romance with a woman in hiding and an emotionally damaged but protective hero who stole my heart! It’s a sweet read with a touch of drama and suspense, and I really enjoyed this one.

Sutton is somewhat new to Sparrow Falls. She fled a dangerously toxic marriage with her young son and has resettled in the small town where she runs the local bakery and has been somewhat adopted into the extended Colson crew. Cope Colson is a hockey player who is fierce on the ice, but is actually a private guy who still struggles with guilt over a childhood tragedy. When Cope returns to his home town to coach at a kids’ hockey camp over the summer, he is instantly smitten with the mother of one of his students, Sutton. And when he learns that she and her son are having a hard time while also running from danger, he goes into protective mode and moves them into his home.

It’s a great set-up, and the perfect situation for their instant attraction to blossom into more. They’re both private people with pretty huge emotional walls, but the more time they spend together, they open up and begin to trust, they share their dark secrets, and they fall effortlessly for each other and it’s so beautiful to watch.

Cope made me want to take chances. To truly live again.

I love these two together. They’ve had difficult times but they’ve shown incredible strength to rise above their painful pasts. Sutton, in particular, is an amazing single mother who has worked so hard to create a good life for herself and Luca. She’s never relied on anybody, so allowing Cope into their circle isn’t easy, but Cope is patient, gentle, and just flirtatious enough to win her trust and her heart, and I loved them together so much.

“No matter the risk. I’m greedy. I want all of you. Your mind, heart, and your fucking soul. If we don’t risk our hearts, then we miss out on life’s true beauty. There’s no reward without risk.”

There is just the right amount of drama to bring the feels, and the mystery/suspense is well done – I thought I had I figured out, but I was totally wrong. Well played, Catherine Cowles!

Another great read from the queen of small-town suspense, I enjoyed this book and I can’t wait for more from this series.

3.5 stars.

I listened to this as an audiobook, narrated by Erin Mallon and Connor Crais, and they do a great job bringing the story to life.
