Penelope is new to Ember Falls. She is on the run from past danger, and is looking to build a new life for herself and her young son, Kai. Miles is the local school principal who has just been roped in to teach a summer hockey camp for kids. It’s not how he planned to spend his summer, but he steps in to help out and ends up coaching Penelope’s son. He’s instantly smitten with the new arrival in town, and when he finds her working at the local coffee shop, he’s determined to win her over.
It’s a cute set-up, and the story is so beautifully told! Though the attraction is there from the beginning, Penelope doesn’t want to get involved with anybody, knowing that her life on the run means that she’ll most likely have to pack up and leave in an instant. But she has a battle on her hands trying to keep Miles away.
Miles is such a sweetheart! He’s kind, thoughtful and patient, and he has the biggest heart. He’s persistent in chasing Penelope, but he’s gentle about it, he goes at her pace, and the way he includes little Kai is so, so sweet (family dates… adorable!). He’s sweet and sexy, and so freaking swoony, and I just adored him.
“You wore me down,” I admit as a tear trickles over my cheek. “You broke down every defence I had, and now I don’t know how to get it back.”
“I’ll be your defense.”
How absolutely perfect is this man.
The love story feels like a slow burn because there’s so much longing involved, and Miles handles it spectacularly. When he finally gets his girl, the romance is hot, sweet, and blessedly functional. They’re feeling a lot for each other, they don’t hide any of it, and I loved watching them come together and stand so strong
“I’ll stand beside you and in front of any danger that comes your way. I’ll fight your past because I want your future.”
There’s a bit of suspense due to Penelope’s past, and I liked the way that was woven into the story. In a fabulously fun twist, Penelope is the sister of Quinn from the Indefinite Duet, and we get to see him and Ashton, as well as some of the Cole Security boys (Liam!) as they work together to keep her and Kai safe. And Quinn and the boys (and Miles) in protective mode is always a good thing.
Miles’ ultimate frisbee buddies are all a part of the story, of course, and God, I love this group! They are so much fun and so entertaining, and their banter had me laughing out loud. I can’t wait for Everett’s book up next.
This is a beautiful read. I devoured it in a day, unable to put it down, and I absolutely loved it.
