A small town, brother’s-best-friend, billionaire romance with drama and suspense, this is the fourth book in the Sparrow Falls series, and it’s a really enjoyable read.
Arden is the youngest of the Coulson clan of biological, adopted and fostered siblings. She experienced horrific trauma in her childhood, and she lives a quiet, almost reclusive life with her beloved support dog on her brother’s property, where she loses herself in her art. When her brother travels away, he invites his best friend and owner of his NHL team, Linc, to move in while his own home is being built. It puts an almost-stranger right in Arden’s path, and she is not happy.
Linc and Arden don’t get off to the greatest start, but Linc is pretty much smitten from the first moment. The sunshine to her grumpy, he is determined to get to know her, and not even Arden is immune to his charm. The two start to talk, they become friendly, he doesn’t hide his attraction and openly pursues her, and Arden’s walls slowly start to come down. And when danger threatens, and Arden’s world starts to crumble, Linc is there in all ways to protect and support her through it.
It’s a cute set up, and I enjoyed watching Linc and Arden get to know each other. Arden has a lot of secrets, but she lets Linc into her world and it doesn’t take long for things to change between them. Friendly flirting and gentle touches soon turn to passion, and they fall hard and hopelessly for each other.
Arden has been through a lot, and she has a lot to still work through when it comes to her emotions, and Linc is romance hero perfection as he slowly and patiently supports her, encouraging her to live and allow herself to feel, and it’s a sweet journey watching her start to reclaim her life.
She also has a huge family at her back, and I love the Coulsen family dynamics. The group chat amongst the siblings is gold, Lolly is lots of fun, and I loved the storyline with Arden and her foster mom. This family has each other’s backs without question, and I love how close they all are. There is so much love there, and I love them together.
But this is a Catherine Cowles book, and drama and danger are never far away. This one had a few surprises but was actually pretty predictable. I’m finding that with each Cowles book I read (and I have read them all), I’m getting more frustrated with the drama. Every story has such a dramatic suspense storyline, and I’m coming to dread it. I love Cowles’ love stories so much, but the murders, stalkers, shootings, stabbings, twists and turns, get a bit much when it’s the same sort of stuff happening in every book. It doesn’t overshadow the romance, but it’s definitely not necessary for the story, and it feels tacked on for no real reason whatsoever.
But Arden and Linc have a gorgeous romance, and I really enjoyed their story. I’m excited for Trace’s book up next, and I’m rooting more and more for a Kai and Fallon story!
A sweet and easy read.
