Original reaction – March 2012

OMG, OMG, OMG, these books just keep getting better!!! I read this book until 2am this morning, and then finished it at work today while hiding my kindle under my desk because I couldn’t put it down.

I can understand why some people haven’t rated this book as highly as others in the series because it’s very dark in places and our favourite characters are a little ‘out of character’ at times. But my God what a rollercoaster! The story had me laughing out loud, gasping with shock and crying like a baby and the whole time my heart was pounding.

Reread – May 2014

Yep, this book is a huge game-changer in the series, bringing angst and heartbreak along with all of the action, drama, and sensational character dynamics that we are used to from this series.

Cat and Bones are facing a new threat – Gregor, ‘The Dream-snatcher’, who appears with shocking claims and even more outrageous plans which leads to a series of clusterfucks for our fave couple. Between Cat’s driving need to always be a part of the action, diving in to scary situations in order to help her loved ones, and Bones experiencing the first real fear of his life with his much beloved wife in real danger, the two of them are in a world of confusion and emotion, leading to misunderstandings, miscommunications and a whole lot of heartache! The angst is massive as they rail against each other, and some of their outbursts left me feeling shattered at the emotion of it all. Absolutely. Freaking. BRUTAL!

“You treat me as if I was a feeble Human who couldn’t survive without your help, but I am a MASTER bloody VAMPIRE.”

*shivers* God, that speech is epic!

But it does give us the opportunity for some fantastic character development, as well as strengthening of other bonds – Cat’s relationship with Vlad is cemented into something very special, I love these two together! And Spade also contributes to the awesome – he is Bones’ best friend, and isn’t afraid to tell it like it is and start cracking heads when it’s needed.

And then… OH. MY. GOD…. The reconciliation is swoony and all kinds of hot, and that and all that comes with it is absolutely epic!

“Did you really think I’d ceased to care? Kitten, I care so much it wrecks me.”

Me too, Bones, me too *sniff*

Once again, this is a fantastic blend of all of the things that make this series so fabulous – the characters, the world, the laughs, drama, romance, and the frequent and fantastic action. I even shed a few tears at this one with all of the angst and an unexpected and devastating farewell. But it all ends in sensational style of course, just in time for the series to veer off to the side for a bit with books for Spade and Mencheres.

Absolutely sensational – 5 huge stars.
