4.5 ‘Spade, You’re Awesome!’ stars

The first of the Night Huntress World books, this is a spin off from the Night Huntress series, and should be read after book 4 – Destined for an Early Grave – in order to avoid massive series spoilers.

First of all, I confess I am a huge Spade fan! Bones’ best friend, he has played a big part in the series so far, and I’ve loved each and every encounter we’ve had with him. He is a 19th Century English aristocrat with a huge heart, and is an absolute gentleman! But that doesn’t mean he isn’t a badass, violent vampire when he needs to be, as well as a hotter than hell lover, and the mix is fantastic!

When Cat’s best friend, Denise, finds herself unwillingly entangled with a Demon and she is unable to reach her friends, she calls on Spade for help. Marked with demon brands, she is tasked with tracking down a long lost family member in order for her to be released from the demon’s evil clutches. And, being the gentleman that he is, Spade feels honour-bound to help her.

Denise is still grieving the brutal death of her husband in a paranormal attack a year ago, and Spade still struggles with the loss of his one love – a human – over a hundred years previously. But as the two of them jet all over the world searching for the elusive Nathaniel and hiding from the demon after Denise, all the while coming to understand what being branded by a demon actually means for her, the sexual tension is extreme (shower scene anybody… phew! *wipes brow*), and these two broken souls start to fall for each other.

“It was the sort of bone deep emotion that made him want to hold her tighter with one hand, and draw a sword against the world with the other.”

Unlike the books in the Night Huntress series, this one is told in dual POV, which I loved. Getting Spade’s side of the story is a real treat, I loved getting the opportunity to know him better.

And it wouldn’t be a NH World book without including the rest of the cast – Cat and Bones play a part in the unfolding action, but once again, it’s Ian that is a highlight of this book for me. Incredibly arrogant and self-serving, he is always there for his friends when they need him, and he even manages to show his caring side in an unexpected heartfelt moment, but he is who he is, and he comes out with some of my favourite Ian-isms in this book.

“Luscious, aren’t I, poppet? Go on, stare. I don’t mind.”
“You look like a Dracula porn movie reject”

“Before you go, mate, turn on the telly. Something raunchy too. Think I’ll rub off one before I go to sleep”

As can be expected from a book in this series, it is an intense ride, packed full of action, humour and romance, with a lot of heart as Denise and Spade move on from their pasts and face their fears and prejudices in order to find happiness together.

“I’m sorry I can’t give you the normal life you wanted, but I promise to adore you every day for the rest of your new one.”

A great addition to the series, and a fantastic way for Jeaniene Frost to round out her spectacular paranormal world.

I loved it – 4.5 stars.
